need help upgrading my RAM
by dustino71 - 6/18/06 10:57 PMI recently installed the public beta of windows vista and would like to upgrade my RAM. I kno how to do it and all but I'm not sure what kind of RAM i need? so i'll give you some specs to help better understand my problem...
I have a GA-8S661FXM-775
IntelŪ PentiumŪ 4 LGA775 Processor Motherboard.
3Mhz
512mb RAM
160gb
I would like to upgrade to the maximum 2gb my motherboard supports.
What I do know is that I can only use DDR RAM, DDR2 won't work, or will it? Also, would Dual Channel DDR work, Will Overclocking DDR work? which if any would be best? Also does the PC type matter? (PC3200, PC2700, etc..?) And I'm pretty sure that I can run 400Mhz as well...hopefully this all makes sense to someone and they can help me out!

And where the manual states the MB uses DDR (or DDR2) ... it means it ONLY uses only DDR (or DDR2), NOT either interchangrebly or both.

If no manual then visit the mtrbd. makers support website and look for your model#. Get the specs page and there find the ram type, etc.. You want 2gb of ram, understand if you already populated the ram slots with your current ram, you may need to pull those or some in order to get a full 2gb of ram provided your mtrbd. supports that. Say, you have 3 ram slots, currently 1gb of ram using 512mb ram sticks, thus, you need to pull at least 1 or two ram sticks in order to install 2-1gb ram sticks. Some ram maynot work well together so take that into consideration as well, thus get 2-1gb ram sticks at the same time from a trusted vendor.

I've done it. Their stuff works - they back it up.
You're probably going to need a lot more than RAM to be happy with Vista.

Use CPU-Z to confirm your motherboard model number:

If you have confirmed that your motherboard is a GA-8S661FXM-775, then Gigabyte (the manufacturer) says that it can take PC3200 (DDR400) RAM. That is, up to two 1GB PC3200 (DDR400) RAM modules for a total of 2GB.
Note that DDR is not the same as DDR2. They are not compatible.
