CRT 19" ViewSonic

by AzraelExael - 6/16/06 9:17 AM In reply to: What type of computer monitor do you use? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

One day soon (I hope), Plasma, and LCD monitors will be as stable and ghost image free as CRT monitors, then I will consider getting rid of my ViewSonic.

I use View Sonic

by TrackStar1682 - 6/16/06 9:36 AM In reply to: What type of computer monitor do you use? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

My monitor is a fifty pound beast with image quality to match! I got my View Sonic 19" Flat CRT around two years ago when most people started to consider LCD's. The color, brightness, sharpness and resolutions easily beat any LCD I've seen. And, unlike using an LCD, I can switch resolutions. And actually, after a new graphics driver installation, a new intermediate resolution became available, and it is PERFECT!

20" wide screen ViewSonic

by regcnet - 6/16/06 9:47 AM In reply to: What type of computer monitor do you use? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

The width works well for me. I can have multiple programs open side by side. I considered dual monitors since I like to copy and paste from one program to another. But the wide screen is the perfect solution for me.

Dual 17" Dell 1704 UltraSharp (LCDs) for me!

by anissat - 6/16/06 9:49 AM In reply to: What type of computer monitor do you use? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

The Dell UltraSharp line of monitors has the best features I've seen anywhere... Everything was easy to setup... The monitors have amazing picture clarity (especially DVI output) with plenty of builtin USB ports. My hubby liked my setup so much, now he made me get him the exact same 2 for his home office setup, as well as the 25+ stations at work office. I've been using a dual monitor setup since late 90's, and I can't imagine doing my work any other way.

23" Apple Cinema Display (old type)

by mwaldyke - 6/16/06 9:51 AM In reply to: What type of computer monitor do you use? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

The 23" wide-screen format is great for video editing (and video watching) and for composing documents like tests (I teach). Showing two pages side-by-side at full size is invaluable! The price took a while to get over when I bought it, about 2 years ago, but the way prices have come down since then it would now be a no-brainer.

Why a GOOD quality CRT still beats an LCD flat panel.

by farhansyed - 6/16/06 10:02 AM In reply to: What type of computer monitor do you use? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I still use a CRT monitor, and for good reason. Since I use a desktop form-factor computer (NOT a tower), there would be zero benefit from an LCD, at least in terms of space savings. Of course since space and weight savings are the ONLY benefits of switching to an LCD, you can see why I'm not interested.

A good quality CRT monitor will last for many times the life of an LCD, and it will provide better image quality and response time. Many people here decided to order tower computers and LCD monitors, and after 3 years, a lot of the LCD's developed lines on the screen, burned out or flickering backlights, and no-power conditions. All of our CRT's still work like they day they were purchased, with no problems whatsoever.

And of course if you need to run programs that require changing the resolution on your display, then a CRT is for you. With an LCD, there is a so-called "native resolution", which is the only resolution that the screen looks good at. If a smaller or larger resolution needs to be displayed, then the image is scaled up or down, which causes pixellization and blurriness. With a CRT, this does not occur. A CRT has a maximum resolution, and it can display anything up to and including that with perfect clarity.

Oh, by the way, I am using a Compaq Business Series 15" flat CRT.

You stated: "since space and weight savings are the ONLY benefits of switching to an LCD,"

Much of what you say is true except the above quote.
The POWER savings is substantial when running a computer many hours a day.
I still have my beloved Hitachi 17" crt but it will serve ONLY as a spare WHEN (not IF) one of my LCD's bites the dust. I never had a need to fiddle with the resolution anyway and I have done a lot of photo and video editing.
I wasn't EVER going to have an LCD either.......

Computer monitor being used.

Samsung 19" SyncMaster 191T

Samsung is a good monitor, and would like to get a 24" wide screen Samsung someday in the future. Dell seems to have a good 24 inch wide screen, but have had the Samsung for a couple of years, and it still has an excellent picture on it after about 4,000 to 6,000 hours on it.

Sticking to CRT for now

by ekent - 6/16/06 10:12 AM In reply to: What type of computer monitor do you use? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

As an amateur photographer and professional photo editor (well, that's one of my hats), I'm sticking to CRT for now. I've got a Dell 19-inch Trinitron at home, and to my eyes there's a huge difference in how it presents color and midtone shading over any flat panel. Price also weighs huge in my decision. I admit, I love the low-heat, small-footprint idea, but I'll wait until price goes down and quality goes up before I change my ways.

CRT vs. Flat Panel

by Startracker - 6/16/06 11:48 AM In reply to: Sticking to CRT for now by ekent

I personally agree. I mainly use a Samsung 900DF 18" Flat Screen CRT. It works great, has great resolution, and I too will also wait for the price to come down on the flat panel. However I do prefer the flat screen CRT over the standard.

2 - Dell 24'' 2405FPW's @ 1920x1200

by LesDelaney - 6/16/06 10:44 AM In reply to: What type of computer monitor do you use? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Bought one Dell 2405FPW in October to upgrade one of a pair of Princeton 1916's and became so spoiled using it that I replaced the other 1916 with another 2405FPW one month later. I'll never go back to using one monitor again! This monitor is the best in my book for the money.
