what kind to buy

by jkamemories - 6/14/06 6:09 PM

I need help. I need to buy a desktop computer for my dad. around 400.00 or less. He needs one already set up so he does not have to decide what to install etc. I would like him to have a Windows XP program so if he gets stuck I can help him. I was wondering if you all could recommend certain models and where to buy. Thanks!

Check Office Depot and Office Max...

For $400 you won't get a powerful system, but it should be able to more than get the job done for an basic user. You should look for an all-in-one package that includes a monitor and printer. For a good deal, I'd suggest checking the local circulars for office Depot and Office Max, which frequently have systems under $400 after rebates. (Expect to pay $650+ up front, but get some of that back in 8-10 weeks.)

An example this week at Office Depot:
eMachines desktop
* AMD Sempron 3400+ processor
* 160GB hard drive
* 512MB RAM
* DVD burner
* 17" CRT monitor
* Lexmark color printer
* $650 up front, but just $330 after rebates.

That's a pretty nice deal, though you may be able to find something a little better if you shop around. (An AMD Athlon instead of a Sempron processor, or an LCD monitor as opposed to a CRT, sweeten the deal.)

Hope this helps,
John
