i have a gateway 42 inch plasma that has two black bars running vertically thru the picture. Has anyone found a solution for this problem that won't cost the $700 that gateway has quoted me to install a new xr board?
I have a 42" Gateway with the black stripe problem and was wondering if there are any restrictions as to who can join the class-action...I am in Nebraska and was wondering if anyone could help me out with some advice as to where, who, when, how, and all those other questions about getting my money back after I got the shaft. Been in contact with some guy out there buying these tv's...Only offered me 125 bucks for my tv. sheesh. Any help is always appreciated.
Brad
The class action suit will only make the attorney money and maybe net you $50 at the end of the day. I joined it all gung ho and emailed/called the attorney and did not hear squat.
Write your attorney general with details of what you've done to date and provide details regarding how you believe the product is defective etc.
It worked for me-
The lawyers are the only ones that make out on a suit like this, the consumer will be lucky to get a $50 certificate towards your next Gateway purchase.
Most states AG offices has a consumer protection division that will follow up for you.
In my case, I can't see where anyone is going to do anything for me on a 4 year old TV.
Hey, never really posted on cnet before, but i went through the trouble of obtaining a login in just to help aleviate any fears you may have about following these directions. They work. My parents plasma kicked the proverbial milk bucket, and i was more than a little annoyed, especially after gateways unacceptable customer support(except for one guy). I was told that i was gonna pay at least bare minimum, 500 bucks. So i got to searching and stumbled across this post/emailed someone who directed me here. I figured, what the heck, im out of warrenty, so why not give it a shot. well, I'm not electrical expert much less a plasma tech, an i can say, that i was able to pull it off. I am typing this response on the plasma that was broken this morning. The total cost...$10.00 from radio shack, and i coulda done it for about $2.00, had i been a more careful reader. I also video taped the whole repair, which i am in the process of upverting and editing, and which i intend to post to a video website in the near future. It was easy, and, it was no where near the 500 gateway listed as base. Once again, thank you, and if you are having this problem, are out of warrenty, and are willing to take a risk, this is the way to go, it payed off for me, and it could pay off for you.
Hello,
I have a sampo PME42v3, do you know if this model is similar to yours? Where can I see your video.
Thanks,
Mario

Found your email interesting. Is the info available yet and is your fix still working? Thanks - Al Cicotte in Ft. Lauderdale 954-940-0467 alcicotte@aol.com
Went to the store and found the connectors, would it be a 9 hole? There aren't any instructions on these, do you have more input? Thanks, Janet
This really nice guy has made this repair link.If you have a lighted black screen when you turn the tv on this usually works. If your tv does nothing at all when you press power, its your power suuply throw the tv away.

The repair link does not fix all problems with Gateway TVs, especially those that contain LG boards/parts.
I strongly recommend people pay more attention to this repair link. I see a lot of discussion of the problem that can be likely and easily addressed by this link. I am a living proof of it and just could not get over how easy this is. See my posting and others under the head of "How to Fix Gateway Plasmas" in the discussion thread.
I added my name to the list today. It was easy to do. They send a form that you fill out with Name, address, serial number, date of purchase etc. They said there was no out of pocket expenses. I figure what the hell might as well make life a little difficult for Gateway.
My fiance bought the above T.V. for me on my birthday on 2/22/2004. The set lasted 1 year and two weeks. We were watching a DVD one night and heard a loud "pop". The screen went dark, but the power light was still on. I tried to re-set the system, but that failed. I talked to Gateway customer service and they referred me to another department which could only be reached by letter.
I sent two separate letters to this department before receiving a reply. Basically, the reply was they were sorry but it's my problem. Gateway said I could have their contracot come out and look at the set for around $500.00. Then if they can fix it, there would be an additional charge on top of that.
I had a local shop look at the T.V. They determined that it needed a new power supply, but neither Gateway or the actual manufacturer would sell the part needed to fix it. I can supply the letters I sent to gateway, if you wish.
The set is still at the shop, so I don't have the serial number available at this time. I would like to join your law suit.
Exact same thing happened to us last night. We bought the TV in Feb 2004 and were watching a DVD last night when the screen went dark last night. Were you able to fix your tv?
