Lost internet access

We are running Windows XP on our 2 systems and my husband cannot get on the net. He downloaded F-Secure from Microsoft, however inspite of this and system restore and everything else (he is quite familiar with all PC related stuff) has not been able to get on the net . Is there anything you can do remotely or by sending me a solution? We are not networked, so I can act independently.
Please help
