Which DVD Recorder is best for me?

by kenneth237 - 5/15/06 5:01 PM

Looking for a DVD recorder to serve two functions, build a DVD library of movies on cable TV, and to record 2-3 hours of TV shows that I usually miss during the week. I thought about a TiVO but hated the idea of having to pay monthly and wanted to build a physical library.
Here are my criteria to help you help me choose a specific type or preferrably a model:
-Under $300
-Cable Box Controllable and/or TVGuide Programming(VCR Plus)
-Support the most common re-writable DVD media types (think DVD-RW is the most prevalent)
-made by a reliable manufacturer

THE TRUTH IS NOBODY, BUT YOU CAN, ..............

MAKE THE right decision. First, read all the websites you can, and study manuf's SPECs.

DO the research on your own first, visits to CC and BBY, among others, especially LOCAL Re-Sellers. Nobody here wants to mislead you or make a profit.

HALF the fun for A/V shopping is the HUNT! The other half is 'bitching' down the price!!! NEGOTIGATE!!!

Best listening,

river.

Yes, agreed, but the feature I want most is to be able to program my DVD recorder through my cable box (and if not I'll settle for TV Guide Programming/VCR Plus+)... and through my research on ConsumerReports, the manuf websites & customer service, cnet.com (which has very little coverage of these devices compared to other products), etc. etc.... I have found at least 5 instances of discrepancies in what features they claim a DVD Recoder has. Ex- Philips website said a recorder could record onto DVD+RW, when in fact it cannot. Also, Ex: ConsumerReports says that one of the Sony models is able to be cable-box-controlled & programmed but I called Sony and they said that was false. So... I have given up on research and have resorted to try to find some MAKE/MODEL SPECIFIC expert advice I could find on forums.

Thanks

Panasonic ES40....

by Psych Doc - 5/16/06 6:29 AM In reply to: Which DVD Recorder is best for me? by kenneth237

...Available for around $275 and does pretty much everything you indicated you wanted.

Mine has been trouble free so far.

I bought it about 6 months ago.

Instruction manual is a joke so be prepared to screw around with it extensively to learn its features.

dvd recorder best for me

by kmsmith54 - 5/26/06 3:10 PM In reply to: Panasonic ES40.... by Psych Doc

I bot a panasonic DMD-E80H nov of 04- one of the best toys I have had recently.
Not all the bells and whistles of Premiere or DVD workshop, but then do not need computer.
Can record whole then cut into segments that become chapters
titling could use some refinement, a few different menue pages would be nice, a save of tiltes would be very nice. - it ca record to its hd a lot of material - I did the whole 2006 olympics, an in simple format it allows you to cut up recoding and reassemble the cuts into chapters of a new recording.
If you have dvd player, playing a dvd in pal format will be recorded as a digital signal on hd and can be dubbed to dvd and will play on any ntsc system.
I even took a Pal vhs, played on a multi format vhs player- but directly into DVD recorder on an ntsc system and made an ntsc playable dvd.
best kevin
I bot mine off ebay for $325 then

Just to update and expand on what I am looking for in a DVD Recorder:
-Under $300
-VCR Plus+ (not TV Guide as been reading it is a nightmare)
-Has a Digital Camcorder DV Input
-Records to DVD-RW -AND- records to either DVD-RAM or Hard Drive
-made by a reliable manufacturer (top 10)
-Some/decent editing capabilities

PS-thank you for the recommendation, but I do not beleive the Panasonic ES40 has VCR Plus+

Which DVD recorder to buy

by rayjay19692 - 5/30/06 4:40 PM In reply to: Which DVD Recorder is best for me? by kenneth237

I bought the toshiba model rd xs-34 with hard disk drive and dvd recorder, says it records in all formats but it does not. List price 399.00 but i got it from my nephews store who works on commission so I can't return it or it would be gone. Recording to hard drive is good and easy, but if you record anything from HBO or the movie channels on the hdd, and then try to copy on dvd's the dvd recorder pauses or stops and says it is copy protected and it won't let you record. The only way i found to do this is to copy exployer 8300HD dvr and play that back on the tv and then it will only copy on the expensive dvd ram disk (9.99) for 3 disc at walmart.

Yesterday I bought a Hauppauge TV tuner card for 99.00 with Personal video recorder and installed it in my computer and was able to copy off hbo and make a playable dvd on my computers dvd double sided drive. I Wished i would have done this first it would have save me 350.00 plus 6% tax, one other tip make sure you have a large hard drive because recording video takes lots of hd space. You can buy 250 mb external western digital at sams club for 133.00. The card comes with titan tv listing which is easy to use and gives you all channels including digtel and hd. easy to install and set up. I hope this helps you.
