Will you do any video editing?

You should try a dual cpu or dual core setup to see the difference.

Intel chip will be always better...

... in laptops.

Go on www.matbe.com and seek for the Turion X2 preview test.

You'll see that the Yonah ( Core Duo ) beats the Turion X2 on every points except one or two.

And the actual Core Duo is also a better choice than the Turion. It delivers 20 to 30 % better performances than the single core Pentium M Dothan.

You'll have always a better battery life with Intel chip.

Intel is leading the mobile market and AMD isn't ready to take the first place.

The Merom will be 20 % faster than the Yonah and will be 64 bits, but Yonah and Merom are pin-to-pin compatible. A BIOS upgrade is needed to upgrade the Yonah. But I don't think that any owner of Yonah processors will upgrade it. Personnally, I will upgrade it only if the 64 bits technology makes a BIG leap into applications, thing that I don't think it will happens.

What's your reasoning?

by funk a dunk - 5/28/06 6:27 PM In reply to: Intel chip will be always better... by Ghost26

First off, what's your reasoning for wanting to go AMD? If it's the fact that AMD has been outperforming Intel for the past few years, you're forgetting that's in Desktop performance, not notebook performance.

Virtually, Intel is head to head with AMD when it comes to Notebooks. Intel also controls about 80-85% of the market, so completely cutting Intel out of the picture would narrow your choices drastically.

From what I've experienced between single core and dual core chips, you'll never want to go back to single core. You can run an Antivirus or Spyware searcher while searching the net with it, which is reason enough for the typical consumer to want it. That's cutting out all of the capabilities for people who edit videos and pictures like myself.

So, in a nutshell, all I'm saying is that if you're not choosing Intel due to some sort of bias you have against them, just re-evaluate the facts and I'm sure you'll make the right decision (YONAH!!!).

But, if you really do want an AMD processor due to some traumatic experiences you've had with Intel, then definitely wait for the Turion X2. Like I've stated, you'll never want to go back to single core again. I know I won't!

Hope it helped!

Dual Core all the way

Definately wait for dual core man. I've got an Athlon X2 on my desktop, runs beautifully.
Just because Intel has more market share doesn't mean it's better. How many AMD Inside ads do you see on TV and such? That's why most people buy Intel's. AMD is usually much less expensive, also.

You're comparing a desktop chip

by Ghost26 - 5/29/06 1:54 PM In reply to: Dual Core all the way by cellularcoffee

It's a fact : Athlon 64 X2 are better than the Pentium D. But don't worry if we see the Conroe overpass the performances of the X2.

But as I said, Intel chips in NOTEBOOK ( in desktop, AMD is ACTUALLY the leader ) is better than the AMD chip ... and Merom will be still better.
