I have been running AdAware and Spybot S&D for years and they do a good job of detecting and removing the bad guys. A few months ago I discovered Spyware Blaster which is a great little program that prevents malicious files from loading. Since installing it AdAware/Spybot rarely detect anything other than the occasional tracking cookie. It takes very little system resource, runs entirely in the background and is free. I'm amazed it gets so little review space in areas like cnet.
I have Spyware Blaster and I agree it's quiet and well-behaved. That makes you wonder if it's really doing anything <G> Does it protect as well against Trojans and rootkits? What do you use along with it for increased coverage??
SpywareBlaster simply blocks websites, ActiveX controls, and cookies from the list of known-malicious sites. It does not provide the same type of real-time protection as other security software, such as the scanning of files that are accessed, incoming/outgoing communications, etc. Thus, it's only supposed to compliment your firewall (such as ZoneAlarm), antivirus (such as Avast), anti-adware (such as AdAware), and anti-spyware (such as Windows Defender, SpyBot, and Ewido) software.
Regards,
John
