Black edge

by iltcm! - 5/10/08 4:40 PM In reply to: Most likely a Registry Problem by kathyables

I generally have my Win XP Home SP2 system running the Media Center Edition look (because it looks so much better!). About 5 minutes after I log in after a boot, the program bar at the top and the taskbar would turn black for about 20 seconds, and I would be reverted to the default XP taskbar look. Nothing else changed. What is the cause?

May I suggest to check your RTC battery, could be that the battery is dead thus the BIOS will not keep
the default settings, you can diagnose it by watching the time diplayed on the toolbar!

windows xp2 billy gates has your dollars its a gas

by jweideman3 - 5/26/06 8:44 AM In reply to: 5/26/06 Help! Windows XP keeps reverting my display properties by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I had to completly shut down my windows up dates they were giving serious problems to my xps 600 after
the last reformat .
its kind of like windows sludge to much updates
that you don't need . and they try everyday to send
them and those updates are very misleading .
if you have norton and windows they seem to not like
each other , some may think I'm Nuts and thats cool
including my computor friends "such lowlifes"
"smiles to you all" !
but when windows and norton work togeather they do
anoying things that end up in failure and the
only way is to reformat . plus norton is flat out
anoying anyway and the best place for there disks
are frisbed out in the lake in the back of my house .

as a matter of fact soft ware companies including
windows love misleading people , how great there
soft ware works when really you have to use two
rolls of duct tape around your head to keep it from
exploding because your $3000.00 computor won't boot
from the box . truth is I love computors and the high
is getting over on the software companies and
making your computor work like a dream , what
you leave in what you leave out ... its a rush
But for you folks who think I'm nuts -every town
has computor repair stores including best buy
and the geek deal there where geeks lots of them
running to your house in VW bugs and james
bond stuff , the Misleading TV Commerical.
but best buy in topeka kansas, must a got
some low end Geeks because they don't seem to no
much and just love norton and The VW Bug Is always up On the Side walk for people to to crack there shines on
heading for the door. and they only got one VW BUG.
what was I saying Oh yeah for those who think I'm Nuts Theres best buy be sure to load up the wallet with that cash for labor , and get those free up dates
for your packard bell from old billy gates
bye ya all
"your old buddy skip" sayin be safe and keep and eye
out for the other guy . trying to steal your butt.

computer on a domain?

by mbcfdude - 5/26/06 8:54 AM In reply to: 5/26/06 Help! Windows XP keeps reverting my display properties by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

If the computer is on a domain, the admins may think it's in your best interest to have a lower resolution. At any rate it wouldn't hurt to look at the following:

1. Start, run, type: gpedit.msc
2. Click ok.
3. Expand User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Desktop
4. Click on Active Desktop
5. Right click on suspicious policies and select properties (like 'Prohibit Changes')
6. If any of those properties don't have checked "Not configured" and it sounds like it may be preventing you from making your changes stick, then set it to "Not Configured"
7. I'd suggest a reboot as well.

If you have access to RegEdit you may want to also snoop into My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft

On yet another note, you may get some strange things happen after a recent Windows Update if you have the Tweak UI control panel installed on your machine.

If that's the case, try:
1. Start, Run, Regedit
2. Navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

3. Click on the Explorer folder and see if there is a key value named "ClassicShell" if so you can safely delete that and restart.

Best of luck!

Rob Sherman

5/26/06 Help! Windows XP keeps reverting my display properti

by mcopes - 5/26/06 9:34 AM In reply to: 5/26/06 Help! Windows XP keeps reverting my display properties by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I had a similar problem which appears to be along the same lines. I am a big fan of having the taskbar on the right side of the screen. Unfortunately, on some Windows installations, I would have to resize the taskbar as it would get smaller with every restart. Now isn't directly related to the problem of your desktop settings resetting to default, mine is the same on a smaller scale.
Now my solution was something very simple. I found a file on the net which is named uxtheme.dll. This file is found on all windows installations in the system32 folder. The original file cannot be deleted, but can be renamed. I renamed this file to uxtheme.bak which allows you to insert the other uxtheme.dll file. Another advantage to doing this will allow you to use themes which was probably not possible before. This was one thing I noticed on mine before and after.

reverting display

by mishu13 - 5/26/06 10:03 AM In reply to: 5/26/06 Help! Windows XP keeps reverting my display properties by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have Pentium III, xp home edition, service pack 2.
I installed Zone Alarm and the computer would always revert to default display on start up or during my use of the puter. I contacted Zone Alarm and tried to resolve the problem.
The only way of resolving the problem was to take Zone Alarm off the hard drive. I replaced it with McCafee and no more problems. It never happened again after removing Zone Alarm.

ZoneAlarm?

by brewnetty - 5/26/06 10:13 AM In reply to: reverting display by mishu13

I have used ZoneAlarm since it was free. I have had Zone Alarm Pro for at least 3 years. Never had my desktop revert no matter what my settings are.
Are you sure you or some other program weren't messing with the stored theme in your My Documents folder"

Re: Desktop reverts possibility

Themes are stored under unique names in "My Documents" Are you using a backup program that regularly moves the contents of your My Documents folders elsewhere?
You can make a backup copy and simply copy it back to restore your desktop as before.

TRY THIS...

by DJPython - 5/26/06 11:52 AM In reply to: 5/26/06 Help! Windows XP keeps reverting my display properties by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I've been having a similiar problem with my desktop icons randomly rearranging themselves even after I lock the desktop.

Right-click the desktop
Click "Save as scheme..."
Give it a name then click OK

It's kept my desktop stable for a couple days so far. I personally think it's a Windows problem. System Mechanic or Norton Systemworks may help.

Windows XP not holding my sound settings

by Ad a/b Jonas - 5/26/06 12:27 PM In reply to: 5/26/06 Help! Windows XP keeps reverting my display properties by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

This relates to the question about display properties. After a day or so Windows mutes all my sound even though we have uncheked the mute button. This has happened since we have had the computer. Very frustrating! Any clues?

Thanks Much,

Drlinne

driver error?

by d2790hm - 5/26/06 1:41 PM In reply to: 5/26/06 Help! Windows XP keeps reverting my display properties by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

alan,

the suggestion i have is set your theme in the display properties to be either windows xp or windows classic, when you have a custom theme it can interfere with some programs, believe it or not I have actually seen this happen, and of course the old stand by is to do a virus scan, there is a very small possibility that this behavior is due to a virus that is on a timered event, more then likely not, but never hurts to try, also depending on the applications that you are running and the type of card that you have it maybe an actual program that causes a system conflict that windows cannot understand and goes back to the default state

The REAL answer

by robnan - 5/26/06 2:57 PM In reply to: 5/26/06 Help! Windows XP keeps reverting my display properties by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

When you start up Windows, all your settings are loaded from a file called "autoexec.bat" which is an automatic exucuting batch file that reverts to profile settings found set in the user's environment. However, it isn't all that difficult to stop the autoexec.bat loading at startup, and this can be caused by device conflicts, trojan horses, viruses or a duff piece of software. Download Microsoft's TweakUI (Use Google) and then in there go to the Logon section. There's an option to load up the autoexec.bat at startup. Tick it (and if it is already ticked, untick and retick) hit OK and restart. If this doesn't work, then the autoexec batch file may well be corrupted.

Er.. Autoexec.bat..?

Uh..Autoexec.bat is so MS DOS... NT (all flavors) no longer use it for much of anything. The file is usually kept around - in case there's a need for backwards compatibility on the extremely RARE occasion something actually needs it. In the most cases, though, Autoexec.bat and Config.sys are nothing more than ZERO byte files in the system root directory.

So, you wanna try guessing again?

P.S. Hint - it's not WIN.INI, SYSTEM.INI either.
