Best Place To Get A Computer Built From Scratch

by jlippincott - 5/23/06 10:55 AM

Where is the best place to get a computer built the way I want from scratch???? I don't want to deal with Dell or Gateway. They already have certain things installed. I want to be able to choose everything
(the case, memory, sound card, video card, programs that are installed, hard drive. etc).

If you choose everything, a few problems.

How will you know it all works jimdandy? For instance you specify some case, power supply and it's too hot and the power supply is too small. While you specified it, who is to blame for the issue?

This continues on to driver, bios and more issues. In fact if we entertain installing MCE (a version of XP), Microsoft and not you dictate some parts.

Let me boil it down to this question.

-> Since you know all the parts you want, why not do it yourself?

Assembling a PC is not hard and you get to know how everything is put where.

Thanks For The Info

Thanks for the info and replies! I don't really want to build it myself. I want someone to help create my perfect computer. I don't want all the stuff that normally comes with packaged computers
(modem, Outlook mail program, other programs that they think I might like, etc).

Any and all issues about the OS, drivers and stability.

Some don't realise this until they've been through the mill a few times.

I know basically what I want in a computer but I don't know the technical aspects. I want a video card and sound card capable of playing the latest games,
2GB of memory, a CD burner, a DVD burner, a decent sized harddrive, a network card for my RoadRunner connection but I have no clue as to what type of mother board or processor speed I want.

Try ABS

Try buying ABS computers. They're pretty good. They let you customize many components. They prces aren't as expensive as vendors like alienware.

Make a wish list

Find a local pc shop that has been in business for a few years.

Take your list to the shop and have a little chat.

If they build it they have to fix it.

Which means they won't build something that tries to put a square peg in a round hole.

...buy the parts off of newegg.com. If you need help with what parts to choose, state your budget and I'll make you a shopping cart.
