I have had the same problem, although mine is a little different in as much as it used to work OK, then all of a sudden the computer would not recognise the flash drive.
I tried the response of Greg H. of Hermet, California, however it did not solve the problem on my computer. My Computer still will not recognise the flash drive.

Hi Dian,
Try my solution at the bottom, turn off USB 2.0 support.
Gosh after all that - a headache
get a life -- get a Mac - simple - I use both - Know which I enjoy
If the solutions that people have given haven't worked, one solution I found to this problem once was to turn off the USB 2.0 support in the BIOS. The only problem with this is that every device you plug into the USB ports now makes Windows whinge about having a USB 2.0 device plugged into a USB 1.1 port and that it'll run a bit slower. My friend had the same problem of her USB drive not working, Windows was actually telling her that the USB drive was damaged (and it did the same with any other type of mass storage device - PSP, digital cameras, etc), however when I did a test with a Knoppix Linux (running from CD), Linux found it fine and worked. I then realised the problem must be something to do with the drivers in Windows. After doing a search on the internet for the make of her USB controller it came up with quite a few people with the same problem, and it seemed that at some point Microsoft had updated the USB 2.0 drivers and caused this bug. At the time (about 6 months ago) MS hadn't released a fix for this, her solution was to either continue using USB 1.1 or go and buy a USB 2.0 PCI card. If it was me I'd have just kept using the USB 1.1 until MS sorted the problem out. My friend though went for the other solution, she bought a USB 2.0 PCI card and it works fine in USB 2.0 mode.
I had the exact same problem and I want to thank you very much for the solution. Your step by step instructions were easy to follow and I now have access to the previously MIA USB Flash drive on my office PC. Thanks a million!
I have Windows Me as my OS. When I went to control panel I couldnt find any of the administrative tools. Where do I go?
Thank you for posting a very informational reply. I have yet to use a flash drive but I am sure at some future time I will. I have thought this would be a great way to run a program that I did not want installed on my computer as well as for transporting information.
My observations of others use of them thus far will be helpful to me in future use....like not removing them prematurely...
I have had just the problem mentioned, and was delighted to see a solution.
Having followed the instruction with great care - allocated 'U' as suggested - I have to report that it made no difference whatsoever !
All that is required is just a change to how you look for it. Nothing else !
Go to 'Start', 'Control Panel', and look for 'Portable Media Devices'.
There it sits - with whatever identification either you or your computer allocated.
At first I couldn't find mine until I looked in MY PICTURES and it was Removable disc L.
I have the same problem and did what was mentioned in this answer and in previous answers a couple of weeks ago. this did not solve the problem. I have to follow the same procedure (the back door freaky solution) every time I want to use the flash drive. it definatly is not a drive re name problem in this case as every time I try to use it, I see the drive but I do not see a drive letter and the display is blank. I am still trying, but with no success.
Thanks solved my problem by using Computer Management
Sometimes this problem results from a more basic problem - the sound of a connection is made; however, the physical connection is not maintained. Check the light on the USB drive as a first step to be sure that the connection is maintained. I have no problems on one machine but occasionally, on a second machine, I have to jiggle the drive to be sure that it is seated correctly. HTH
Well I had this problem and I was running ME. Tried all sorts and ended up with a windows re-install. Obviously the USB software was either corrupted or was never istalled properly in the first place.
Thank you Greg H. for the information! I, too, had the same problem that Thor had.
And to CNET...thank you for being here. I have learned so much from your site: from solving tech problems to assessing software and hardware options prior to making purchases. I have recommended your site to so many people. I appreciate you! ![]()
I thought I follow this discussion because I have lost both the "bling-blong" AND access to an external drive. I can still access this drive on my desktop, so I know it works. However, my Sony Notebook has not done a bling-blong for months. Nor does it any longer see the external drive, which I had planned to use for back ups. Microsoft Knowledge Base does not help. No bling-blong may be the reason this notebook no longer sees the drive. The USB 1.0 on this 7-year old Sony worked O.K. with the Venus box when I first installed it last year. Then the bling-blong stopped and the Sony no longer see the external drive. No drive letter; no bling-blong; no drive. Apparently, one of Microsoft's many Windows XP updates screwed up my USB connection. By the way, the USB works O.K. with the external Sony CD drive that came with the notebook.
