im using Toshiba Laptop L300,windows vista, why? every time i inserted my USB or Flash drive to USB port it always automatically to open instead of displaying the Auto run first so that i can check the file in flash drive before i decided to open it. .
I had the same problem with a machine as listed in the article. The difference with mine was that no USB storage could be seen. That includes USB flash drives or external hard drives.
Somehow A service called "Removeable Storage" got disabled (probably by a 'cleanup' utility like system mechanic).
Go to Control panel-->Administrative tools-->Services and see if you have A "removeable Storage" service, then check the status field to see if its status is listed as "started" and that Startup Type should be "Automatic". If the startup type is "disabled", double click the service name and select "automatic" from the drop down list in the middle of the new window that pops up. You can also manually "Start" the service with this window. Once "automatic" is set, it will start on its own on your next reboot. You will only have to use the "start" button this one time, or you can reboot and let the system start it on its own. Once started it should be able to see the drives again.
If the service was listed as "started" when you first check, then this solution doesn't apply in your case.
i used to have the "nowhere to be found " problem but it seems to have resolved itself (?? i'm suspicious of problems that fix themselves) but what does happen occassionally on my PC and almost all the time on others PCs in my network (all XP pro) is that inserting a USB flash drive in a running computer shuts it down immediately.
if the drive is left in and PC started, it behaves just fine.
any ideas?
Hey
This happened to me one time and i know why. Basically when i first plug in the usb flash drive, i heard the noise and then i could see the drive and also there was a "safely remove” icon on the system tray. So when i was done using that i accidentally choose "disable" this hardware instead of "safely disconnect". So after that when ever i plug in the device, i hear this noise but nothing happened after that. But here is the solution that worked for me. i connect the USB device waited for that noise to come -> navigate to control panel -> Add Hardware -> Choose "Yes i already Connected the hardware" and then i notice my usb flash drive was listed there. So i choose that and thus i again "enabled" this device for use. Now the steps i provided applies to XP Platform
When my USB flash drive bings, but doesn't show on My Computer, I simply expand the C: drive that is shown, and Voila! it always appears a few lines down, linked to c: identified as a removable drive.
Good luck,
Dan
I have 3-1 gig USB sticks. One of them is not being recognized. All are the same manufacturer. It has been working, I created all of them on the same laptop.
Any suggestions will be appreciated. I am going to run thru the suggestions in ths is thread.
TIA

I just wanted to thank everyone for their kind words regarding my response. I am quite honored to have my submission chosen and I hope it helps a lot of people. Just remember, if my "fix" doesn't do it for you, make sure you read down through the other responses and posts here in this forum. There is a wealth of information to be had to resolve almost any USB conflict I could think anyone would run across.

...when I hook my flash drive into the front USB 1.1 port it NEVER loads, but if I hook it into the back (where I have a USB 2.0 card), it loads just fine. Thought these things were supposed to be mostly backward-compatible (just slower)...but maybe not.
This might also help:
When I had a leftover 80Gb HD, I bought a totally inexpensive external housing for it to use as backup drive space via USB.
For awhile it worked, but then all of a sudden it stopped loading when I turned on the drive, or even before boot. (I'm also on XP home)
I've since replaced the whole setup with a new HD and new housing (which enables "HotSwap") and everything seems to be working flawlessly now...
My wife bought an MP4 player recently and very much wanted to take some of her DVDs and compress them to MP4 to play on her MP3/MP4 player. We tried all the trialware ripper versions we could find, looking to find something that we know would work before we actualy paid money for it.
We never found anything that actually worked for us. The next step is to use a DVD player and a Dazzel and bypass the whole protection process that way....
After doing this, we then started having the above problem with both the USB and our memory card reader. The more sinister side of this is that now system restore no longer works either. It always complains it is unavailable, and suggests rebooting the computer. That suggestion never seems to work.
It looks like I will have to try a repair on a previous backed up version that I try to make weekly.

i want this post to appear at far bottom where it can be easily seen by all members but it went to the wrong place.
Please forgive me for posting this twice. I'm very desperate for quick answers.
my USB drive works fine in windows but is not available when i boot to MS DOS.
Does anyone has a clue where i can find drivers to enable DOS see it?
i want to throw away the sluggish old floppy drive and replace with USB as my startup disk but DOS can't reognize usb boot. What should i do?
Does anyone know which devices boot from LS/ZIP in BIOS settings?
Where can i find windows boot files for LS/ZIP devices?
i don't even know what they are. Please help!!!
Doctor Dos' Dos site at
http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~ak621/DOS/
has a whole list of DOS USB drivers (plus lots of other DOS stuff. Give it a try.

I have this problem with my jump drive and digital camera and now I know what to do to solve it. Thanks for the topic.
It is also a good idea to use the same USB port each time for your flash drive. If you use a different USB port, then there is the possibility that your system will detect it as a new (different) device on you system.
This advice also applies to other types of USB devices.
eg WIFI CON 1
2
3
4
etc
All I can say is Good Lord! PCs must drive people crazy...ten or twelve steps to make a drive show up...Frankly, if I had to work with that woebegotten and old fashioned and horribly engineered system I would become a Luddite. Step one...get a Macintosh Computer. Step two plug in the drive. Step three do what you want to do. Step four, pour yourself a nice espresso and step five get some real work done.
