Windows Restore Function Not Working

by asian_angel - 1/3/06 11:58 PM

I have an unusual problem with the windows restore function on my computer. It seems to still be making automatic restore points periodically along with the ones that I create. However, I am unable to restore to any of the earlier time points.

I have used all of the virus and adware/spyware programs on my computer to check for problems and they all report my computer as clean.

Does anybody have any idea of what might be causing this or any suggestions to repair this without reinstalling the entire system again?

The system I have: Hewlett Packard 533w, Windows Xp SP1, Intel Celeron CPU 2.00 GHz, 256 MB RAM, Intel 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller.

I have also installed the unofficial patch for the WMF flaw.

Installed on my computer: Norton AV 2005, Zone Alarm Firewall (newest free version), AdAware SE Personal, Spybot Search & Destroy 1.4, Spyware Blaster 3.5.1, Spyware Guard 2.2, Ewido Anti-Malware 3.5, Arovax Antispyware 1.0.494, Arovax Shield 1.2.314, Spy Defense 0.9.5.118, HiJack This Scanner, CWShredder 2.19, Blacklight Rootkit Eliminator, Rootkit Revealer, and Earthlink SpyAudit

System Restore does nor restore

by Papa Echo - 1/4/06 2:08 AM In reply to: Windows Restore Function Not Working by asian_angel

What happened when you perform a system restore ?
''I am unable to restore to any of the earlier time points.'' does not tell anything. Tell what happened, what you saw. How many restore points do you have ? And-what made you want to use System Restore - what other problems do you have before finding out that System Restore is not restoring ?

What happened when I tried to perform system restore

by asian_angel - 1/4/06 3:02 AM In reply to: System Restore does nor restore by Papa Echo

When I tried to do the system restore, it would start the procedure, turn the computer off, restart and show the computer doing a restore. When it finished with that screen the computer would go on to the login window and when I finished logging into my account it would say that my computer could not be restored to the time point selected and that no changes had been made.

I have many time points for December (I did not look earlier since I did not want to go further back). There are also already about three for this month since my computer does this often. So I have plenty of time points to choose from and I tried more than one (they all had the same result).

I was doing a system restore after deleting a new software that I had tried but did not like (Zone Labs IM Secure Free Version). That is when I discovered the problem. Funny thing is I had already created a restore point right around the time I installed so I know the create part was working fine (and still seems to be).

If there was something else that caused this problem from an earlier time, then I am not aware of it. :(

System Restore problem.

Well, was the removal of the program successful ? Your problem with System Restore is quite normal. It is not perfect.Perhaps there are too many points created. Fortunately for you, the problem is minor. This is what I would do if I have the same problem:

Go to Disk cleanup and clean disk of temp files, empty recycle bin etc., plus the restore points but the latest. If the removal (uninstall) of the program is successful, it is not really necessary to perform a system restore. Anyway, try whether it works after the disk cleanup. If still not working, disable system restore, reboot and re-enable. If the removal of the program was not successful, try reinstalling it, and then uninstall.. If you still cannot remove the program, there are other ways, but System Restore was not created to remove programs.

Update

by asian_angel - 1/5/06 2:05 AM In reply to: System Restore problem. by Papa Echo

I was successful in removing the program but my computer seemed to be acting slightly unusual afterwards, so that is the reason I decided to do a system restore.

As for the number of restore points there are I am not certain but I will try to remove the excess like you recommended. It will be a couple of days before I can do too much due to work and getting ready to start another semester at university.

Since my last posting, I have begun to suspect the tiny possibility that one of my newest protection softwares may be acting too aggressively and was interupting the system restore process. I have posted to the forum for that software and I am awaiting a response from them.

I will keep you posted and thank you so much! :)

Perhaps...

...you should also provide more information on but my computer seemed to be acting slightly unusual afterwards. It may be a coincidence. Since uninstalling, have you rebooted ?

i had the exact same problem

by PastaFagioli - 5/17/06 5:37 PM In reply to: Windows Restore Function Not Working by asian_angel

i had the exact same problem with unistalling Zone Alarm and trying to revert to a restore point. I decided to uninstall because I got the blue screen of death a couple of times after I installed Zone Alarm and Arovax. What did you find out?
