inspiron e1505 intel 945 gma

by ajcarson1 - 5/14/06 2:01 PM

i got the dell inspiron e1505 with the integrated graphics chip. i actually wanted the dedicated memory option the 128 mb or the 256 mb ati chips. what difference does it make to the e1505 when you choose the ati chips as opposed to the integrated intel chip. if its not much of a difference then i would not switch to an e1505 with the ati chips x1300 or 1400. i believe none of the two ati chips are completely dedicated graphics card..they do share some of the system memory. also i noticed the intel chip is actually 256 bit while the ati ones are 64. i am really confused. i love the laptop but the graphic options have gotten me confused. i do wanna play games like warcraft, red alert, gta and some other 3d/non 3d games. please help me out.

one more thing: did anyone notice the flashing cursor hourglass thing, i fixed it by removing gtb.exe from startup. i also think there is a slight difference of max volume in the power dvd and the windows media center dvd player. i could be wrong, its very subtle if any. maybe there is no difference, i dont know.
also when i use the power dvd program ,the dvd starts of very smoothly to the menu and the opening screens. in the windows media center dvd player, there is a slight slowness in the opening screens to the menu on some movies i watched. otherwise all is good. i have 1 gb ram and 120 gb hard disk (15 mb is reserved for the system restore data). how do i check on my system if my display is true life or not, its widescreen 15.4 display and its very bright and glossy and beautiful. the diaplay was the selling point for me. my friend had one and he showed it to me.
thats it, sorry for the long post. hope u guys can answer my questions :)

First, I don't think that you have an Intel GMA 945 in you e1505 but well a GMA 950. 945 is the chipset number.

Then, it's certain that the ATi chip is far better than the Intel chip. Why ? Because the ATi chip don't steal the entire 224 MB of VRAM from the system RAM.

Dedicated chips will be always better than integrated chips. It's a fact.

The ATi chips aren't completely dedicated as you said. They are equiped of the HyperMemory Technology who steals 64 ( X1300 ) or 128 ( X1400 ) MB of RAM when the graphics controller needs this memory ( i.e. when you play a game ).

For 3D, Intel chip is really really BAD ! Intel chips are designed for business in summary. Nothing 3D please !

For the TrueLife dusplay, it's easy. Does the screen finish is glossy or mat ? Do you see reflects under a light or not ? If the screen is gollsy, it's a TrueLife display.

For the volume, I didn't notice it. Maybe with more concentration I can hear it ... but I didn't notice it...

i wont be using this for 3d gaming...have a ps2...what abt the gta and red alert strategy and nfs games..will they do..
Also is the intel gma 950 good for dvds and stuff and light gaming..cos i cant really change it now..as long as i can watch movies, listen to music and occasionally play some game..i am fine with this..cos i love this machine :)
i just want to be satisfied that the gma950 is fine for dvds and light gaming thats it.

thanks
