Hey everyone! I need your help! I consider myself fairly computer literate, but, I guess not that literate! I have noticed that my DSL ZyXel Prestige 600 continuously sends packets of information off to the internet world without me even clicking or using anything! I have the free zonealarm firewall and it doesn't even register that anything is being sent or received while this is happening! Also, I have noticed that if I re-start my computer (2.4ghz Dell Pentium, etc.) then the flashing/sending of information will stop! Then, after I have surfed the net for a while, or I bring the computer out of "hibernation" it seems that this starts happening again....and I have to re-start, etc....
I currently use the following programs to identify and prevent viruses, spyware, etc...
Windows Defender
Spybot S&D
Spyware Guard
Ewido
Ad-Aware SE
AVG anti-virus Guard
SpywareBlaster
And on occasions, I use CCleaner to clean/empty out the cache etc...
My question is this...Does all the DSL transfering of packets etc, shows me that I have a spyware or virus or something? I have used all those programs and they come up with nothing! I've even tried BitDefender online virus scan and another free online virus scan...and they come up empty! Or, is this maybe static or interference in the line that shows up via the DSL and the modem registers that it is sending packets?
I'm worried that there might be a virus or trojan or spyware sending everything about my computer to who knows where! Thus, I need some tech help here!
Any information/knowledge would be greatly appreciated!
Did I mention that when I re-start the problem tends to go away...(lights aren't blinking when not using internet and the network connection properties doesn't show any packets being sent out...) but that it seems to do this when my computer goes into "Hibernate" and I turn the computer back on after hibernating! Should I not allow the computer to "Hibernate"?
Thanks for any/all help!
You didn't mention an OS, just guessing it is Windows XP.
Default setup allows many things to harvested by Microsoft. If you asked MS, they will swear the information is absolutely necessary for XP to run. It's not. Same with your ISP. I have SBC/Yahoo. Learned over a period that I don't even to install much of their software. Try somewhere like "Theeldergeek" to find out what programs actually do and what setting is best. Also
a way to speed up your computer. Alos set your firewall
to only allow some programs (like Internet Explorer) to only access the internet after asking. A paranoid user. chuck
I have the same problem, exactly. Not only that, it occurs whether I'm using DSL, cable, or even a phone modem...same thing exactly, just as you describe.
