On the basis of the glowing recommendations from this forum, I bought and installed XoftSpy to get rid of SurfSideKick. I agree it was fast; unfortunately, it didn't remove SurfSideKick, it only detected it. It was unable to remove a DLL file that caused SurfSideKick to restart after the computer was rebooted.

As a level 3 tech support specialist for an ISP, I found that a combination of Ad-Aware; Spybot; Hijack This and CW Shredder do an admirable job together. Although certain spyware requires special removal tools, this combination works effectively. No one tool can find and remove it all. In many cases, I have had to find specific removal tools or hack the registry and system files manually.
CyberDefender is a startup utility that is quick and easy to use. On my XP system with 450+ Gig of hard drive space it usually takes about 10 minutes, can run in the background of most programs (even games)and will usually catch more spyware than my old Webroot Spyweeper software.

My main line of defense is the newest version of SpySweeper, then Spy Doctor and Zone Alarm Pro's antispyware utility. Since they can all be running at the same time, unlike anti-virus programs, I feel relatively secure, not that once can be completely sucure. To the best of my knowledge I don't have any spyware on my computer. I try to be careful where I go on the internet and what I might click on.
I also use several, in no particular order: Zone Alarm, Ad-Aware, Spybot A&D, and Yahoo! toolbar's Anti-Spy. Sometimes I only run one; other times I run two or more consecutively (also in no particular order).
When I run two or more consecutively, sometimes one seems to pick everything; other times, another detects more than that which I used immediately before ...
... but I still can't help but wonder if something might be able to sneak ...
I recieved Webroot Spy Sweeper with my laptop, and I think it works beautifullly. I especially like that there is a blocker that stops cookies in their tracks. Also, it's so proficient at removing spyware while using my computer that during my weekly spyware check there is almost always no spyware to catch.
I don't understand why everyone is whining so much about spyware. Not getting spyware is actually quite simple. All you really need is a better web browser (say Mozilla), with that, as long as you only download software from trusted places like CNet, I can almost guarantee you will never get any spyware on your computer.
And even if you do get spyware, if you use Mozilla, it may not even bother you. Because I had GAIN on my computer which came with the free version of Divx Pro, but it didn't bother me, since it only opened ads when you used IE.
Yes Firefox is far superior to IE, but the back doors can still be opened when other programs access the internet. For example, I did not use IE or a firewall, but had over 10 infections on my computer.
The precious post did qualify his response by including the statement "as long as you only download software from trusted places like CNet". Obviously you run some dodgy software.
I as well only use firefox and have not gotten any spyware for a year.

Any program, such as AIM or even Yahoo Widgets can become infected and open a back door without you knowing it. A firewall will tell you.
If you install a program such as AIM or widgets and told your firewall that these are 'safe' programs, then aren't you screwed?
I mean your firewall is not going to alert you when a program you have previously told it is safe is accessing the internet.

Of course, im just saying, Fox isnt the ONLY defense you have to use. you cant just use fox and be safe.
