I have a Dell Dimension 4700 with XP Home SP2 running that had no problems whatsoever until April 11th. On April 11th, I downloaded the security fixes from the Windows update site and now I have video problems. I tried to use system restore, but can't get a good restoration prior to the 11th. I also uninstalled all the security patches from the 11th, but no change.
So the problem is this: I get an error message that my video controller hardware is not installed ''(Code 28) The drivers for this device are not installed'' so I went to the Dell site and dowloaded the software for the drivers but then get an error message that the drivers can't install. I also downloaded the software to reinstall the controller and that won't work either.
No big problems really...video is grainy and for some reason I can't access standby or hibernate in the power options (not there) and during shutdown (greyed out)
Anyone know what might have caused this and how to fix it? Any help would be appreciated.
You don't mention what is installed as a video adapter. Are you positive you have the correct driver?
Double check in Device Manager to see which adapter is installed. After getting the correct driver then uninstall the old driver from Add/Remove programs and try reinstalling the new driver.
I have the exact same problem...and same model computer. The problem also started after I downloaded the security patches from the 11th. I suspect a virus...anyone know the fix?
