can't boot or boots with mouse and key board frozen

by LatinGeek - 5/6/06 1:54 PM

When I try to boot my XP pro pc one of three things happen:

1) The pc POST's but will not load XP. I get a multiple beeping tone and the error message: "windows could not start because the following file is missing or currupt: <windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe. Please re-install a copy of the above file".

2) The pc will boot and run xp, but the mouse and keyboard will be frozen.

3) The pc boots and runs properly.

When I unplug the keyboard the pc boots and runs ok with just the mouse working. I have tried using other key boards but that has not helped.

Thanks for the help, I really need it.

sfc /scannow

Start - Run - type - sfc /scannow - OK
Don't forget the space between c and /
I believe you need the CD that came with your computer
to repair files. I have never needed to use this.
Someone else could tell you better on what's needed.

A method by user with similar problem.

by seafox13 - 5/6/06 7:28 PM In reply to: can't boot or boots with mouse and key board frozen by LatinGeek

Insert your Xp disk into the CD drive, then choose the "Boot from command prompt" option in the menu that you are presented with.
At the command prompt, type in the following:
copy d:\I386\Driver.cab c:\system32\ntoskrnl.exe /v
where d is the letter of your cd drive
Press Enter.
Take the CD out when verified and reboot your computer.

Check BIOS error codes.

by seafox13 - 5/7/06 6:49 PM In reply to: Crashed again by LatinGeek

AMI BIOS error code (if applicable in your case) for RAM refresh errors is one long continuous beep from the case speaker. In this case, reseat the Ram sticks or swap out for known good sticks.
I know, clutching at straws!

Error Checking

by cmmer31 - 5/7/06 1:28 PM In reply to: can't boot or boots with mouse and key board frozen by LatinGeek

If you have windows XP working after it crashed try Error Checking. This takes about 30 minutes.
Start - my computer - right click local disk (C) - properties - Tools Tab -
Error checking section - Check now - check mark both boxes - Start -
This requires a restart to begin.

I have never had any luck with this helping me but you can try it.
