No to be picky Tom, but you're not much of an anglophile

by zlando - 5/5/06 4:29 PM

I love being picky...
Tom! I thought you were meant to be the expert on the British! How can you scan a pound note into Photoshop when there's no such thing!?
The lowest amount of money carried on notes in the UK, is £5! A single pound is only available in the form of a 'pound coin'.

Dangit! You scored a "gotcha!" on Tom. I consider it to be my most prized of targets. Usually when I aim and fire and think I have a kill, I've missed, the clever bugger.

:-)

-Kevin S.

PS he could have been speaking generally by saying "pound note" to mean any amount of currency from 5 pound on up. So I may have to give you a critical wound rating as opposed to a kill on this particular gotcha.

What?!?!?

There is not a £1 note? I was sure there was, in fact not so long ago I was saying how I had not seen one of a while - the very next day I got one. You know what, If I do get one, I'll mail it to Tom so he can prove you all wrong.

*does some research*

In England, they have gotten rid of the one pound note, but here, in the nice part of Britain (Scotland), we do still have the £1 however it is not very common as the notes have a service life of around 12 months apparently.

So I will now work to acquire one and if Tom were to give me a mailing address for him at CNET, it too could be the proud owner or a circulated £1 note.

What about Adam Ant?

by christianboy65 - 5/6/06 5:40 PM In reply to: What?!?!? by rosscbrown

It's an honest mistake. Tom is a child of the 80s and wasn't it the great Adam Ant who told us all:

''If the words unspoken
Get stuck in your throat
Send a treasure token token
Write it on a pound note pound note''

You will also note...

...that Deke refers to it as able to scan pound notes. Which it can if youc an find them. I have an old pound note at home (but thanks anyway Ross!) but I also believe it's common to refer to pound notes when talking about them in general.

So wounded I am.

You're more likely hear the Dandy Highwayman say 'gissa quid' as he points his replica gun at you in a Camden pub.

Pound notes - so last century guv.

Why

by vidyman - 5/9/06 5:47 AM In reply to: Tom, you're more barking than Adam Ant... by oarsum

Why has the pound disappeared as currency in England?. Is this because it’s sinking in value faster than the dollar? Or has it been upstaged by the Euro? Just curious.

I think

by Dirty Pirate - 5/9/06 6:23 AM In reply to: Why by vidyman

The pound note was replaced about 1985, at least I remember then when I was posted in London and South Hampton. I really remember them because the One Pound coins stretched the beegeebers outta my pant pockets.

As for the Stirling value droppping? not a chance, wish I was paid in those rather then the Euro. And still kicking the USD's butt. Many countries are moving to coins rather then bills because it is just plain cheaper to keep them in circulation.

Nut Shell.. I know there is more to it.

Pound note Pound note

The pound note was replaced by a coin for the same reasons other countries have replaced low paper denominations with coins, durability.

The pound is quite strong actually. The UK is one of the few EU countries that has not converted to Euros, though Euros are acceptable currency in many places there.

Check out 'The Sweeney' (70's police drama) to fulfil this part of your anglo education.
