The XBRs are too expensive for my price range, but I see what you mean.
I still want that new/invisible Sony 50-incher (LCD rear proj). I would love to get a 50 inch Panasonic plasma, but they're $1200 more expensive, and the slight increase in image quality and physical convenience doesn't rationalize spending that much more money...

I'm in the same predicament with the cost of an HDTV. The absolute maximum I can justify spending on a TV is $2500, although I would rather spend around $2000. The two best TVs I identified in that price range are the Sony 42"/50" LCD projection sets and the new Panasonic 42" plasma. The XBR is supposed to be one of the best overall sets around, but even spending $3500 for the 50" set is out of the question.
