Breinc, Im pretty sure the person who started this post to begin with, was trying to explain their self as good as they could! As being so new to computers my self, sometimes it is very hard to put it down as what the whole problem really is!! We, come here for answers to our ?'s, and yes sometimes We dont make our selves clear. I can assure You it, is not done on purpose. Fran
I had the same problem w/ a Dell Optima and it turned out to be a capacitor problem w/ the mother board. Replace the mother board and no problems since. Just a thought.
My PC was crashing at verious intervals, i tried everything including cleaning the fan, then i found out what the prolem was, the main moter was wearing out, i replaced this and now i have no trouble with crashes.

Every once in a while my XP will act as though there is something very wrong: for instance, getting the error ''there is no dial tone'' or the computer takes forever to boot up or the scanner isn't working or I will see error notices from WINDOWS DEFENDER or other programs. I found out that everything went back to normal if I unplugged and replugged each connection to the computer. This included both ends of each power cord. I guess because all the external devices hooked to a computer are made through what we could call ''soft connections'', it seems reasonable that we could have some questionable connections from time to time which could cause strange things to happen and make us think we were about to see a crash. Anyway, I hope this helps.
Why bother with MS updates when we still need to purchase separate antivirus, anti-spam programs, etc for our PCs? There must be a striking balance between them ie. there's no use updating the MS software alone & find that the PC is still being hit by virus & spammers, just to name a few. All this because one is, for example, still using an outdated antivirus program. Don't expect any brilliant support from MS either! Let's not forget who are the ones who created these mess in the first place! We could probably give you a simple solution but thats not for discussion here.. for many good reasons!
thank you so very much miguel !!! Your answer was very very 'user friendly'. (you also were nice to people like us who are not all IT tech's either)
.. I truly appreciate the time you put into the thorough explaination of what to do, how to do it ... and why !!!!
thanks once again....

I had an ocassion where after a fdisk and reformat of a hard drive stopped me from using the internet, via DSL, after installing the operating system, Windows98SE at the time, Internet Explorer could not find the interner even though Fire Fox could. What I had to do was take the hard drive software and write "000'S" to the drive to clear the problem. May have a virus in the boot sector that fdisk and format would not delete.
