User account unrecognized

by plhauslein - 4/29/06 6:40 AM

I'm trying to change my user name to my sisters as I am giving her this pc for school. When I double click user name I get a message saying the current user account is unrecognized, reboot and try again. I checked msconfig and am in a normal boot sequence, my current user name, The Bakers appears at the top of my start menu and the my documents file. There are no other users on my machine. Any help is greatly appreciated. Running xp home, just ran windows update last wednesday. I don't know how long this has been a problem since this is the first time I've messed with user accounts on this machine since i set it up.

Thanks

Change User Name

Open command prompt and type, control userpasswords2. Click to highlight the account name and select properties. Then you can type the name you want to use.

Your account is corrupt. Create a new user account with admin properties log in on this account and delete the corrupt one, select save files and folders if there is anything you want.

You don't mention how you tried to...

change the user name.

This is the proper way:

Log in as Administrator and then go to "Start - Control Panel - User Accounts" and then select "Change an Account" select the user name you want to change and then change the name. (if using XP Home that means you access the admin account in safe mode)

If that is not how you did it change it back to what it was and see if you can log in--if so change it properly.

If you can't then most likely you have corrupted it. This link steps you through creating a new account and recovering what was in the old account:

Wipe it clean...

by jcg3 - 4/29/06 6:55 PM In reply to: User account unrecognized by plhauslein

If i was going to give my computer over to someone else i would wipe the whole ting clean. no telling what kinds of junk programs you downloaded or the website you went to downloaded for you (isnt windows wonderful...). if you dont have the means to do this process take it to GeekSquad in BestBuy. if you do not want to do this or there are valued programs you are affraid of losing then follow what these guys said above my post. but i would still take it down to GeekSquad and let them do the "once over". hope this helps alittle.

your happy hacker,
JCG3

PS- i dont work for GeekSquad or BestBuy!
