win xp home and win xp professional networking compatibility

by NoAscii - 4/28/06 3:37 PM

I have two desktops and one wireless notebook running on win xp home OS on a home network using router. I recently bought a new notebook running xp-pro and I am unable to get it in the network to function with the other three. My main issue is that I have one printer which I use for all the pc's running on home they all print and are recognized on the network. I want to be able to use the new notebook that has xp pro installed so I can use the printer on the network....is this possible??

please help.

thanks,
Brian

yes, I ran network setup several times....appeared to work, clicked finished. when I go to access the notebook after running the wizard from one of the desktops it says I am ''unable to access....''....not sure why..still working on it....reading about un-binding....pretty deep stuff not real clear...

when I try to go to my network places and view work group computers it comes back with error...." mshome is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this network resource. contact admin of serverto find out if you have access permissions.
the list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available." on all three of systems running xphome they connections show up but as soon as I click on the notbook it once again says un accessible. confuising?!?....any help is appreciated.

thanks.

What do you really have?

the best way for me or anyone else to help is to give us the low down on what you have on your computer (the new one) like firewalls! also what type of network? is it computer runned? or do you just have a stand alone printer server? help us out man so we can help you.

regarding what I have...

by NoAscii - 4/28/06 5:33 PM In reply to: What do you really have? by jcg3

sorry, I thought I was giving enough info....but now..I have figured out my issue. has nothing to do with operating system, (home or professional)....it was a Norton firewall issue setting in networking...I was not allowing range of ip address to be allowed through the new notebook....had forgotten I did this on my last one. So, all is good!! Network is running and can print from ALL systems using the single printer attached to one of my desktops on the network through file sharing. I stumpled upon this as I tried to Ping each computer, noticed I was unable to with norton enabled...began disabling each one individually and voila!!...however, hope this might help others to remember those little fire wall issues!!

Thanks,
Brian
