I am having similar issues and wondering what you have found or confirmed.
I have a 1999 Jeep XJ 4.0
7'' lift 35'' tires
I jsut recently installed an Atlas transfer case. My Jeep has stalled once before, and restarted no problem. The last time, I turned the engine off and tried to restart seconds later, nothing. The battery is fully charged, I tried to arc the starter, nothing, the guage cluster goes in an out, sometimes reading no bus. It doesn't crank. Transmision is automatic, tried it in park and neutral, no go.

I am now experiencing this same problem with 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd. Doesn't start and then when it suddenly does all elctrical is whacky - clock goes to midnight, radio stations change and air conditioner turns itself on at 22 degrees celius. Same everytime. Did anyone find a solution to this problem?
I have a 1995 Jeep Cherokee and have the same problem. If I pull on the shifter a little, while it is in park, it starts. It is the cutoff sensor in the tranny. No way am I spending more $$ on a 12 yr old care. If it works this way for now....I'll take it.
Don't forget to check the starter relay.
Have a 94 gr cherokee. New fuel filter, Rotor,Cap, Plugs,Wires,Coil.Have fuel in cylinders, spark.Still wont start. Yess I have a key and the engine cranks!! Can someone help?Much appreciated!!!
hi mate ive got same prob did u sort if so tell me the secret please thanks mike
replace your crank shaft sensor with a dealership part, my 94 would turn over but not start, replaced the sensor with a napa part worked for awhile yet was told by others it wouldn't ''hold up''...it didn't after 2 months got the dealership sensor...no problems
hi can i ask you to try and remember for me what size bolts and what tool used to take the two crankshaft bolts out of the engine thanks, ED i have a 94 5.2
The size should be 11 mm or 3/8. But almost everything on a Jeep is Metric so stick with the metric if you don't want to strip anything. You also may need alot of extensions if your taking them out from the bottom end. This seems to be the easiest way unless you have girlie hands. Good Luck!
The security alarm can be subtly deceiving and lock out the owner with a fuel cut-off switch if it's been activated. If the battery or anything else that triggers the security system has been activated especially after sitting and changing the battery, it will shut off the electric fuel pump with a cut-off relay. Take off the ground for the battery for a few minutes, then put it back on and your flashers should be blinking. Then use the key to the left and to the right in the driver's door and/or the rear hatch. One of them should make the flashers stop, and the vehicle may then start. You can also ground the purple and black wire to the alarm near your left foot in the kick plate by the parking brake.
Hope this helps!

Thank you so much! This helped!
I've done everything, ground the purple and black wire from the security box, turn the key back and forth on the passenger side door, disconnected the security box under the glove box, etc...
My jeep is old, been through a lot. But I want to get it started. When I turn it over it will "catch" for a second, and then it will shut off. Is there any way to go straight to the source and shut the security system off. Mine keeps flashing. And sometimes if I leave it flashing it will stop after a while. But still does the same thing.
Can anyone help me and tell me what to do in a simple step by step fashion?
Thank you so mcuh!
Matt
I have a 1997 jeep grand cherokee that our son ditched in a ditch of water on the drivers side. We changed all fluids, new battery. The dash lights do not work and the battery runs down unless you unhook it. It does not want to idle, you have to keep foot on the gas and brake, but it fires right up . All the lighting, headlights and turn and signals are broken out but the drivers headlight which works. We are replacing them today. I am guessing the main computer is okay because it does fire up when you hook the battery up and with the anti theftlock I was told it would'nt if the main computer was on the fritz. My question is, what do I need to make those dashlights work and to make it quit draining the battery and idle better? Please help. No jeep dealer close here. Also if it is a wiring harness or dash module of some sort, will replacing that set off the anti theft lock and shut it all down? Is there a way to disable this stupid system? thanks tina/94tomtom
can you please tell me what is the way of doing to be able to read Flashing code on my grand cherokee 1995.I think the instrument is in under the glove compartment but past that i don't know what to do.
To access your codes (Jeep 1990-1995) Turn the ignition on off on off and on (don't turn it over) leave the ignition on, the check engine light will turn off or be off, then it will flash numbers for code, all the codes are two digits, the first number will flash once for a one or twice for two and so on, then there will be a significant pause between the first and second digit, then longer pauses between codes. If the pcm (powertrain control module) is funtioning properly then when transmission of all codes is complete, it will flash 55, so five flashes followed by five flashes. codes range from 10-60 more or less. 12 means the pcm has been cleared within 50-100 starts, for codes see http://www.webejeepin.com/Check-Engine.htm this should be good for 1990-1995 jeeps.
For the trouble starting, my 1995 Jeep Cherokee had the problem where it needed to be started in neutral and progressed worse to needing to be jossled or cranked several times to start after clicking and not turning over. I had the starter tested and the starter was OK. The mechanic said it was the neutral safety switch on the transmission and also likely the starter. At its worst the Jeep wouldn't start but after jossling the starter, removing/replacing the starter, and adjusting the bolt on the neutral safety switch would make it start easier temporarily.
