install New Hard Drive with win98 original install pack?

by tainian2000 - 4/29/06 7:47 AM

I installed an identical 40G Hard Drive to my old Compaq Presario. Then I used the original compaq Windows 98 install packs. It has two CDs that say Quickrestore numbered 1 and 2.

The situation is that when I used them i get the no sistem files found on drive.

Then I used the Win 98 CD provided and it installed Win98 but then I could not install the sound drives ESS.

The problem is that the computer keeps asking for the Win98 CD everytime I try to install the audio driver and the file I explore in the Win 98 CD for the driver is not recognized by the installed Win 98 from the same CD, it says it does not find the driver for my hardware.

Also it keeps asking for an MSNP2DLL and anytime I install new hardware drivers it asks for the Win98 CD on the drive and then it does not find the files in it that are neccessary.

This may be from a time when you were expected to fdisk and format the drive with system files before you used the restore CDs. Today people expect better.

I'd try the fdisk and format C:/S routine first.

If you had an F10 non dos partition on the old drive...

1. this contains the diagnostic/BIOS partition, where you get a larger white blinking bar at boot, for a few seconds, and hitting F10 will take you into it.
2. The quick restore CD's should blank the Hdd, install the partition, format the rest of the Hdd and install the OS with all proper drivers, IF your PC will boot from CD. You amy have to Fdisk the Hdd and start with no partitions.
3. your other option is to "clone" the Hdd, including the diagnostic partition, from the old 40gb hdd.
4. the longer harder option is to delete all partitions after downloading the diagnostic floppy package from Compaq(HP) with a working PC and create the 3 or 4 floppy set. Check floppies for bad sectors.
Then you can run the floppies, create the F10 partition, and then use a regular boot floppy to "sys C:" as Bob says.
