spyware antidotes

by dollsey74 - 2/10/05 12:31 PM In reply to: 2/08/05 My favorite antidote for spyware is: by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I use the following:

Ad-Aware (free version)
Spybot Search & Destroy
SpywareBlaster
SpywareGuard (although it hasn't had any updates since January 2004)
Microsoft AntiSpyware (although I probably won't continue to use it in the future if Micro$oft requires consumers to pay for it)

I don't use any email clients (e.g., OE, Thunderbird); I prefer web-based email.

My Favourites are...

AdAware, SpyBot and Spyware Blaster. I've used these since getting my computer 6 months ago. I use Internet Explorer.

Last night, based on what I read here, I installed and ran the Microsoft AntiSpyware beta. It found nothing. I'm not sure if that's a good thing...

Anti-spyware-which ones?

by johnjack3 - 2/17/05 5:19 PM In reply to: 2/08/05 My favorite antidote for spyware is: by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I tried Ad-Aware and had problems with my computer and had to uninstall -- maybe will try later. I have Windows XP with SP2 upgrade. Someone said it could have been the Windows Firewall that caused the problems? Also wondered if anyone has heard of/tried SBC Yahoo Anti-spyware. I plan to try Microsoft Anti-spyware. Thanks

Had to dump Adaware & PestPatrol

by JayeD - 2/21/05 2:19 PM In reply to: 2/08/05 My favorite antidote for spyware is: by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

We had been experiencing so much system lag on all our machines from conflict's from Lavasoft's Adaware, that I disabled it to try Pestpatrol, but soon had the same lag & conflicts.

We use these machines for business, in legal settings where seamless access to research, documents & data are crucial to our image, any disfunction, spyware & adware is just unacceptable.

Decided to try Spybot Search & Destroy with fantastic results. No lag on any of the laptops or PC's after 8 months of daily use. I finally uninstalled Adaware & Pestpatrol completley.
I sent Spybot a payment in gratitude, the peace of mind from Spybot has been priceless.

Info on the equipment we use:

The 2 desktop PC's:
Emachine T3085, with a 2.17GHZ,AMD Athlon 3000+processor 512 MB RAM,
Dell Dimension 8250 with an Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.40GHz 512 MB RAM.

The 3 Laptop's:
Fujitsu LifeBook P(Crusoe Processor),
Dell Inspiron 600 M with 384 MB RAM, XP Professional, Dell Inspiron 8600 Pentium M, 512 MB RAM, XP Home.

We just purchased a Toshiba Portege 205-810 Tablet for one our analysts, and will download the Spybot Search & Destroy before deploying.
