Sirius rocks

by rmazzeo - 4/28/06 1:54 PM In reply to: satellite radio?? by dsconst

Got Sirius for Howard, but love all the commercial-free music, any genre, old time radio shows, NFL, ESPN, news, local traffic & weather..no end to the content. Of course, I spend a lot of time in my car. At home, I listen too..have the home kit...never will I go back to commercial radio...same crappy music over & over, static, trying to find a station when traveling. You can have it, I'll take Sirius anyday...

Right on!

Got Sirius so I could listen to Stern. I have not had an FM radio station on since I got the unit for Christmas. Yes you have to pay for the service but there are no commercials. That is a trade off I will gladly make. The content is worth it between the music, talk shows and comedy. I too have the home kit so I can have it on all weekend while I am doing things outside in the yard. I drive 70 miles round trip and listening to Stern while laughing out loud makes my drive to and from work a pleasure. I live in the Chicago area and the traffic can be brutal sometimes. I used to get upset but now I just listen to Sirius.

Sirius blows away the competition!

by Trainman4237 - 4/28/06 7:46 AM In reply to: Are you a fan of satellite radio? by jameskim CNET staff

I'm a truck driver, and I was an XM subscriber who converted to Sirius.
Interestingly enough, I wrote a comparison review of XM and Sirius for my own messageboard....and Sirius was by far the winner as far as product quality, pricing and programming quality.

XM Vs. Sirius - Each has its own advantage

by KathyW - 4/28/06 9:59 AM In reply to: Are you a fan of satellite radio? by jameskim CNET staff

I've tried both and opted to stick with XM as it has better reception and a variety closer to my own tastes. They have incredible comedy channels, traffic resources and a killer variety. Besides, more folks like XM and it has double the listenership of Sirius. Aside from that. I find Howard Stern repulsive and won't support asny station that promotes him - no matter what!

XM got there first & they're still ahead in many ways

by punterjoe - 5/26/06 5:07 PM In reply to: XM Vs. Sirius - Each has its own advantage by KathyW

XM had a head start of, if I recall, about 6 months on getting the service going. That may be why they have always had more subscribers. Sirius may narrow the gap, but XM is still benefitting from that lead. Aside from renting cars with different receivers, I don't know how one could really compare the 2 to see what's best for them. You really have to live with it for a while & explore, before you can judge whether it's worth the $13/mo. The Big Box stores are far too noisy & busy to permit any real comparison, and you really can't spend enough time to make an informed decision.

Enjoy XM very much

by klausnet - 4/28/06 1:55 PM In reply to: Are you a fan of satellite radio? by jameskim CNET staff

My wife and I enjoy XMRadio very much. We like the 40's Channel and then FRANK'S PLACE, HANK'S PLACE, SUNNY, BLUESVILLE, OPERA, CLASSICAL. It is on at our house 24/7 and well worth th low cost. We wish we had gotten sooner. Jim

Wouldn't be without XM!

by shermantx - 4/29/06 10:01 AM In reply to: Are you a fan of satellite radio? by jameskim CNET staff

I enjoy listening to XM on my drives into the city... Living in the sticks we just don't have access to great radio stations via tower broadcasts. With XM on board we have the best programming available. An added plus with XM is the streaming stock quotes. LOVE IT!

I have to say it's my favorite gadget and the price makes it a great value. BRAD

Satellite is best thing boing

by a2cnet - 4/30/06 8:12 PM In reply to: Are you a fan of satellite radio? by jameskim CNET staff

First off, I couldn't live without satellite radio. I spend 2-3 hours per day driving to/from the office. Spending that much time listening to broadcast radio with its innane DJ banter, commercials 3 minutes out of every 5 and the same 40 songs over, and over, and over drove me nuts.

I have Sirius in one car (Ford) and XM in the other (GM.) I prefer Sirius because it is much more musical. Sirius has much more song variety, and more mainstream music. XM music choices are often goofy groups that I've never heard and don't want to hear again. Also, Sirius has about 8 stations of my favorite music genre(classic rock) to XM's 2. The news and talk shows are mono on both, but XM sounds like they're taped in a garbage can ... horrible!

Not a Fan of Satellite Radio

by nelsondr - 5/5/06 4:45 PM In reply to: Are you a fan of satellite radio? by jameskim CNET staff

I checked out both options, and found that I really wouldn't use the service enough to justify the cost. I currently have some Sirius stations available through Dish Network. At most, once a month I may listen to a station while doing work around the house.

That's not to say that I'm a fan of FM radio. I can't stand FM and the fact that Clear Channel holds a monopoly on the airwaves. Instead I subscribe to Yahoo Unlimited and have tons of stuff downloaded onto my Dell DJ30 and if I listen to music around the house, I will stream one of the stations on there.

shoddy service from xm, read full review at xmliving.com

by xandymemije - 6/2/06 6:36 AM In reply to: Are you a fan of satellite radio? by jameskim CNET staff

I received a bill from xm. Went to their website to pay it, and it was ''under construction'' for over 2 weeks. My radio quit working. About the third week I finally got into the ''manage your account'' and paid my bill. XM Gladly took my money, but never turned my radio back on. They tried to rip off the wrong person. After numerous attempts to try to ''REFRESH'' the radio, to no avail, I had to call into their support number which terminates in a third world country. The auto attendant that comes on will only spin you into an infuriating RAGE. You have to scream ''representative'' into the phone about 20 times to get a live voice. Otherwise you are caught up in a web of menus that make no sense. The guy I talked to had the wrong account up with the wrong account balance and you know I couldn't understand him all that well. He said my radio would work in 15 minutes as he turned it back on. It never work. I had to call back in. I got a woman this time and she said the other guy left my account in ''processing''. She moved it out of processing and said it would work in 15 minutes. I told her I wanted her to stay on the line until I seen it work and she hung up on me. It did eventually work. The xm website was developed in a third world country as well and it stinks to high heaven. Obviously XM is money hungry and doesn't give a crap about their subscribers, that is the feeling I got when they took my money and didn't turn my radio back on. I was very close to changing to sirius to find out what their interface is like.Good Luck.

negative messages about XM reflect ignorance of XM

by rdesutter - 5/18/07 7:35 AM In reply to: shoddy service from xm, read full review at xmliving.com by xandymemije

I've had XM since it's inception. I haven't had the trouble any of these people express. It introduces me to new and exciting music I've never heard! It educates me in old school genres such as the blues & jazz. I get my baseball games no matter what - black out - whatever.

The people posting negative things about XM don't know what they're talking about. The only guy in this list that remotely knows what he's talking about is the trucker. Now there's a guy that depends on XM.

However, the choice between the two is soon to be irrelevant b/c XM usurped Sirius.

Lastly, give them both a try. It's free online to stream for 3 days. Each have an attractive quality over the other - which makes them competitive. Don't let a bunch of nay-saying old people tell you whether or not you can enjoy music that's not spoon fed by a focus group/demographic test in Southern California (ie. most Clear Channel FM rock stations).
