I have had my Toshiba Laptop since January. I admit I have tinkered around with Litestep, unsuccesfully, but I never changed anything important. I don't think that has anything to do with my problem, just thought I should note it.
I have windows XP Home and for some reason when I start up my laptop it seems to start fine, but when it gets to the desktop, it wont finish loading. It starts to display the start bar, but it will never finish. I have a term paper due next week and it's trapped in my laptop.
Please download and install the new "version 2" of the update below.. See if it helps.

Manually download the Windows XP update, then install it.
The problem has occurred for users of Nvidia graphics drivers or HP scanners/camera software
Hope this helps.
Grif
and see if you can do a system restore.
