That's a good question, and one I'm afraid I'm not

by Levene - 4/18/06 7:02 PM In reply to: This is a sales pitch and not related by rechellesharp

completely prepared to answer. Jim Southworth speaks extensively about security issues on the conference call. Kanosis claims an exceptionally secure environment, comparable to banks and governments. However, for me to explain it to you would likely compare to me explaining baseball to Babe Ruth.

I remain completely intrigued by Kanosis and its prospects. I also value the opinions of technical experts such as yourself. This is why I posted here.

If you have the chance to listen to the conference call, I'd truly love to hear your take on Southworth's input.

Thanks again...

And Apple is Just Great???

by Bobo-1 - 4/16/06 8:24 PM In reply to: OMG I HATE WINDOWS by wizardjs

It must be nice to be so superior when you have an Apple. In the real world all computers have problems - just there were mot enough Apples for anyone to even care. Give it time and Apple will catch up with the virus craze.

And as a bonus if youever live in the real world you will use Windows or not work. OMG what a thought - work.

Just let it die

by ythe1300 - 4/18/06 7:01 PM In reply to: OMG I HATE WINDOWS by wizardjs

As some one who uses multiple operating systems I feel that I have the Authority to say Just let this thread die. There have been good points on both sides but I belive we have come to the conclusion that windows enthusiast and Mac enthusiast are always going to have this argument you have all been draging this on for a long time so let's just Breath in deeply and let this thread float away into the Abyss that is the internet. I'm not asking you to get along or agree just asking you to move on to a new topic. (I've grown tired of seeing this thread over and over) There are plenty of other good things in this ever changing tech world to fight over than operating sysems.

Okay end rant:

I get so tired of hearing mac users bashing windows

by Tepes De Muerte - 4/18/06 10:43 PM In reply to: OMG I HATE WINDOWS by wizardjs

APPLE HAS A LARGE CHUNK OF IT THAT IS OWNED BY MICROSOFT!!! Apple was actually going under and Microsoft bailed them out to keep them from having even more monopoly court cases. Yes, that's right, apple was going under, one vendor making an entire computer can never compete with a computer that has an entire company devoted to EACH of its components (a PC). Is Windows perfect? NO. But it's the best OS that is out right now as far as compatibility, software selection, and ease of use.

MACs are not invulnerable to attack, it's just that no body cares enough about macs to bother finding ways to hack into them. Your mac probibally has more security holes than a windows box does because no one is finding the vulnerabilities. EVERY PIECE OF SOFTWARE/HARDWARE CAN BE HACKED. PERIOD. If you want to get technical, there could even be ways to hack a computer NOT connected to the internet if you got your hands on some of the governments technology.

Windows has flaws found daily because it is the most widely used OS in the world, and is constantly being updated and improved. You can complain about old distros of windows, but even win2K professional was prety stable, and you REALLY can't complain about XP, it runs on a WIDE variety of hardware and software, and you can't say that about MACs.

Also, them finding the vulnerability and fixing it is a good thing, not a weakness, it means they're securing their software on a daily basis. If you're backing linux or another of the unix OSes, ok, you can complain, but if you own a mac? ha!

MAC is even MORE proprietary with their code than windows and is admiting defeat by putting intel processors in their systems, it isn't "setting the intel processor free", it's making a mac a PC that is designed the way they used to design packard bells (proprietary and you have to buy all your components from them or else add a hack-saw modification to your tower and buy some star wrench screwdrivers). This is admiting PCs are superior!

MACs are only usefull to have if you're a graphic artist or a music producer, and even then you can find comparable programs on windows systems, the industries just don't embrace PCs for some reason, probablly because of people not actually looking at system specs, but rather going "my mac is better because it's a mac"...

I have an alienware laptop and have had people say "why didn't you get a mac laptop?"... let me think here... because my system specs are twice the speed of a mac, It runs Doom 3 better than my desktop, and it cost 1/3 less than a mac. You cannot argue that macs are better than PCs anymore, they're going to be obsolete in a few years, and the only reason they aren't now is because of uninformed people who know nothing about computer hardware/software (and have to buy cds off of tv to "learn how to use a mouse") and they haven't completely gone under only because microsoft bailed Apple out.

To tell you how informed MAC users are: I actually had one of my college professors say "I like my MAC much better than a PC, I used to use an Apple II and when I switched to my MAC there was a big difference"... AN APPLE II IS NOT A PC, IT'S THE MAC EQUIVALENT OF THE TIME!!! THEY'RE THE SAME COMPANY!!!

If you want a secure OS, then get something based off of UNIX, but I seriously doubt you have the knowlege to run anything from a command line, so why don't you do some research before bashing windows? Also, why do you actually care, and why do you hate windows if you don't even USE it? Why do you even care if they find flaws? It doesn't affect you. You're just pissed off because you bought into a failing company and want everyone else to do the same so you won't feel so bad if other people are doing it too. <end return rant>

I'm tired of people not getting it

by rtemp - 4/19/06 1:42 AM In reply to: I get so tired of hearing mac users bashing windows by Tepes De Muerte

Before you read this post and begin dismissing my statements as an "uninformed person", know that I am typing this up on my personal Windows machine.

Yes, Microsoft bought a chunk of non-voting stock back in what? 1997? Right after the Second Coming of Jobs. Apple was doing bad because of years of mismanagement. Steve found a way to get some more money in the coffers. Take note of the "more" in previous sentence. Apple did have money in the bank (I don't know the numbers, but I'm sure someone else does), they just didn't have the earnings to keep things going. Will any true Macophiles deny this? Nope, it's just part of the history.

Windows the best in compatibility, software selection, and ease of use? I'll give you the first two, but not the last one. Of course when an OS has 90+% marketshare it's going to be compatible, because it's practically the only thing around! Software selection follows in a similar fashion.
Now let's tackle ease of use quickly. People can write essays on it and not touch everything that needs discussing. I'm going to use one example to help demonstrate things: installing/uninstalling software. On a Windows machine (about 97% of the time), you get an installer program by whatever means (download, CD, etc.), you run the installer, things finish up, you use the software. To uninstall, you go to Add/Remove programs, tell the program to go away, and it supposedly is gone from your hard drive. However, sometimes you get those little files that just hang around, not being used by anything, just chilling on your hard drive. Very irritating. Now, on a Mac (about 80% of the time), you have a disk image, you mount it, you drag and drop the application where you want it. To delete, you take said app and drop it in the trash. Done. Even if you run an installer, you don't have to do any more than drag the app to the trash and delete it to be done with it.
Just as a quick aside, Apple did everything they could from the very beginning of the Mac OS to make things as simple as possible for the user. Some of these things created trouble, and were changed with the change to OS X.

Anybody educated in any way, shape, or form about computers and security threats knows that any system connected to the internet is vulnerable. Anyone who denies this is a fool. What I will say is that I believe that Macs are inherently more secure than Windows machines. Anyways, I think people from both sides of the fence latch onto the security arguement far too much.

Yeah, Apple has very proprietary tendencies with their code, so what? Shouldn't the guy with smaller marketshare be allowed to such, at least much moreso than big brother?

For the last time, the Intel switch isn't admitting defeat. IBM wasn't delivering on their promises, plus Apple needed new processors for their laptops. They figured that Intel was the best option in regards to performance per watt.

I'm not touching the upgrade part, mainly because it seems that you are just talking about Packard Bells and have never actually disassembled a Mac in you entire life.

Macs are useful to anyone that uses a computer, unless you absolutely must use a specific piece of software that is only available for Windows.

I don't care about your laptop, but I'm glad that you like it.

Most of the uninformed people (at least from what I've seen) that would get those CD's from TV are the ones that buy Dells, not Macs.

Again, you jump to "Microsoft saved Apple!" You do realize that it was Apple that paid Microsoft money to first develop software on their Apple ]['s, right?

Apple ]['s existed before PC's, just like how the Mac OS predates Windows.

Yeah, I do think that a Unix-based system is a good idea. That's why I choose OS X. Oh, and thanks for insulting the intelligence of every Mac user here, by insinsuating that we don't know how to run a command line. You sound off on people needing to do research before bashing Windows, but I think you need to do more research before you start bashing Macs. At the beginning of this, I mentioned what computer I'm on, so you should know that I am using Windows, so that gives me full right to talk about anything I want, especially since Windows makes me irritable on a regular basis. Yeah, I don't care about flaws. I'm only "pissed off" because people like to come in and pretend to know everything.

Now, let this topic die.

I moved to Mac, then back to XP..

by R2Venom - 4/24/06 11:43 AM In reply to: I'm tired of people not getting it by rtemp

So everybody told me "Mac's the best, look at that twee little iBook, you've got to use it, AND it's got that most solid OS X operating system."
Well last May (2005) I finally fell for it and bought one.
I did OK at first, most things worked; of course Mac didn't recognise my multifunction printer, but hey, I could always route it through the PC desktop that I wanted to get rid of, right? I could buy another printer/scanner, which I did, ending up with a cheap HP abomination (I don't mean that HP make bad systems, just that model that's all.)
Of course I would have to buy most of my software again, but that's not the point I guess, that's merely MY problem.
So I also buy an uptodate copy of Quicken for Mac, which should be no problem, exactly the same software right? Wrong: I'm in Australia where only the Windows version is supported ["there's no call for a Mac version"]; not only that but normal accounting KEYBOARD commands that accountants expect, the KEYBOARD BEING FASTER THAN THE MOUSE (info for Mac users.. [most PC users know this]) were simply ABSENT!!
The final nail in the coffin, quite frankly, was the extreme irritation with knowing (after 15 years using PC's) that all the small and large pieces of software and utilities that I had used, abused, saved up and played with were simply no longer available!
Indeed the extreme paucity of software was a killer, since a large proportion of smaller software manufacturers barely bother with Mac because the market is so tiny. (PALM is better supported!!!)
ALSO you have the IDIOTIC RELIANCE on the bloody mouse; BUT: --- WITHOUT making full use of the right-click menus available with just about ALL Windows software! (However, obviously expert Photoshop users use the keyboard I do admit.)
These reasons finally drove me to sell my iBook just 6 weeks later and buy a Windows laptop. I was sooo unwilling to give up, that's why it took me THAT long.
When I made that decision to go back to Windows, it's hard to imagine the RELIEF I felt! Suddenly I looked forward to the constant virus updates, the constant reminders from Nortons, etc. Oh relief! Suddenly everything worked again, my software, my keyboard, even my mouse!!
AND MY MULTIFUNCTION PRINTER.

What good is the most wonderful easy to use operating system and hardware if it doesn't have the application software you have come to depend on?

Its like kissing Catherine Zeta-Jones through a screen door.... it looks great, but does nothing for you.

Imagine your mac stability with windows (a full blown copy) running in a window at full speed, Now the PC is redundant, the network share for the mac is from the Virtualisation pc

and when you need that windows software, you still have it.

If you commit 15 years to a product you dont change

Unless its OS2 and they pull it . or beos or .... .

Now its really gonna do it all

With your commitment to software and your passion for how the windows interface works you should never have switched You could have had both, but never were you a switcher.

Enjoy the viruses ... Oh and dont forget to get the new patch that patches the last buggy patch too. Its pretty important

Have a nice life

You, Redhats Q, are a FUD spreader

by cardsbb9 - 4/24/06 8:10 PM In reply to: Now you see why I am excited by parallels by Redhats Q

To try to increase Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt you type "Oh and dont forget to get the new patch that patches the last buggy patch too. Its pretty important"

While the truth is that an extreamly small number of people will be (were) harmed by the patch.

This from Slashdot: http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/04/22/0520200

"The glitches" ... "affect only a tiny fraction of the 120 million installations of the patch, stem from a new binary called VERCLSID.EXE that validates shell extensions before they are instantiated by the Windows Shell or Windows Explorer. On systems running Hewlett-Packard's Share-to-Web software, Sunbelt's Kerio Personal Firewall and some NVIDIA Drivers, users complained that the new binary stopped responding."

The Mac must really be a poor machine for you to stoop to such a low tactic.

Sorry if you didn't like it, but...

by rtemp - 4/24/06 8:41 PM In reply to: I moved to Mac, then back to XP.. by R2Venom

There are things you need to realize.

1) The multifunction printer - Did you get the appropriate software from the manufacturer? If they didn't make the thing to where it can communicate with a Mac, that's their fault, not Apple's.

2) Quicken - I don't use it, but that's terrible that they sold you software that they won't support. I'm also going to note that if the keyboard commands for Quicken that should've been there weren't, it's the software maker that had the stupidity to omit them.

3) Mouse Reliance? I find Windows to be far more mouse reliant than the Mac OS. Want an example? Pick a file, any file, and get the Properties on it without using the mouse (or that contextual menu key that's on newer keyboards). On a Mac, you just hit Command + I and you are there. As a matter of fact, a couple of years ago, I used the keyboard for just about everything, but then I got my Windows box for gaming, and have regressed pretty badly towards point and click.

1. There isn't much profit from it.
2. They don't want to hear mac users bicker like they do when talking about microsoft.

I'm sorry but I am SO tired of mac user complaing about microsoft when they DON'T even use a microsoft computer.

I have revised my statement on this matter many times. I wasn't clear in my original post and so had to clear things up about what I meant. Reading what I actually said (try the "ugh my fault" post) would be a wonderful courtesy before you go start bashing me. Secondly, i have a spare windows PC that I almost never use, other people in my family use it though so it has anti-virus and spyware yadda yadda yadda its supposed to be as safe as it can be, one day, without any attachment opening, it gets a virus and I have to pay $300-400 to fix it and recover everything. My Mac has less anti-virus and is fine. Thanks for knowing what your talking about before you start bashing me.
