PC crash etc

by phalli2227 - 4/21/06 3:37 AM In reply to: PC crash when accessing Microsoft Update by vaal

Had similar problems for about a month, got to the head-banging stage. I could not access any Microsoft site, MSN, Windows and Microsoft Update.
Quite a number of folk on message boards had the same problem.
My solution - r/click IE, click Programs, then go into Manage Add-ons.
Enable any MSN prog there.
Worked for me.
Too simple? - probably!

CRASHES TRYING TO ACCESS WINDOWS UPDATE SITE

by cheopitrinche - 4/21/06 3:44 AM In reply to: 4/21/06 PC crashes trying to access the Microsoft Update site by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

1- PHISICALLY UNINSTAL ALL ADAPTER CARDS.
WHITH THE EXEPTION OF AGP OF COURSE.

2- FORMAT YOUR DRIVE, OR PARTITION.

3- INSTALL YOUR LEGAL WINDOWS XP COPY.

4- GO TO WINDOWS UPDATE AND PROCEED WITH DOWNLOADS.
SP2 AND EVERYTHING ELSE.

IF IT FAILS:

YOUR MOTHERBOARD OR OS IS CORRUPTED.
GET A NEW GOOD MOTHERBOARD AND GO THRU STEPS 1>4.

IF IT FAILS AGAIN YOU CAN BE SURE IT IS THE OS.
ASK MICROSOFT FOR A NEW ''FREE'' COPY OF WINDOWS XP WITH XP1.

IF IT WORKS:

1- ADD ONE ADAPTER CARD AT A TIME AND TEST.
CHECK FOR UPDATES ETC.
IF ANY ONE CAUSES PROBLEMS, TAKE IT OUT AND BUY A NEW MICROSOFT COMPATIBLE CARD.

PAY SPECIAL ATTENTION TO YOUR SOUND CARD.

YOU HAVE TO FINISH THE INSTALLATION OF ''ALL'' YOUR HARDWARE BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE.

2- ADD ONE PROGRAM, UTILITY, ETC. AT A TIME AND TEST.
IF ANY ONE CAUSES PROBLEM, UININSTAL IT AND DON`T USE IT.

HOPE THIS WILL HELP.

PC Crashes trying to access the Microsolf Update Site

by jdoduke - 4/21/06 4:09 AM In reply to: 4/21/06 PC crashes trying to access the Microsoft Update site by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Dear Victims of Microsolf Update Site,

I have recieved too much error reports from my friends as well as my customers. They said Windows XP is not enable to start up and the screen appear the F8 mode

Safe Start up
Previous Start up
.............

What so ever you chosen, Windows will not work at all.

I have replied by Microsolf Service, they claimed. It was due to the update programs can not find a harmony between your Windows OS and the maintenanced programs. Example: your DirectX, your Patchs, and also your products license.

Mostly, my customers do not have licensed windows. As the result, they usually met failure to upgrade patchs.

Resolutions:
*Check up your latest Drivers (Newest Drivers for devices)
Notes: your drivers have to be synonised (harmonic) with DirectX9c.

You can also check up with Microsolf Customers Service immediately (as you are licensed WindowsXP SP2).

Thx regards.

I didn't read all threads so i don't know if you're using 32BIT or 64BIT Winodws XP? I would have asked that question right up front & it should have been included in your post! I do know this works for 32 bit XP on updating you OS!

Computer Crashes

by calteel - 4/21/06 4:52 AM In reply to: 4/21/06 PC crashes trying to access the Microsoft Update site by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Sometimes it is hardware related; such as what just occurred to me over the last few days. My system would freeze, do strange re-boots, and freeze up. All the usual software checks were done; virus, Norton System works scans, etc... Well it turned out to be the hard drive. The bearing, of the motor seezed and thus stopped working. Fortunately, the drive had 6 months of the 3 year warrenty left to take advantage of a manufacturer swapped.

So, this begs the question, or questions:

1. How old is the PC? Drives, and the associated components that are electro-mechanical in nature do wear out.

2. When did you last do defraggs? Windows disk scans for errors, etc.. If you are heavy user, suggest you do weekly defrags, or at the very least do run an analysis of the disk via Windows XP defrag utilities.

Anyway. That is my experience. Oh, one more important point: BACKUP your data routinely. Fortunately, in my case, I did.

Same problem, different OS

by fredtech2 - 4/21/06 6:34 AM In reply to: 4/21/06 PC crashes trying to access the Microsoft Update site by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have tried all of the options that have been suggested. However my system doesn't just crash. It gets wiped out. No Operating System at all!!! I run Win 2000 Pro. No problem with anything except when going to Microsoft sites. Updates, forget about it! So my suggestion is DON'T up date thru Microsoft. I started going thru CNet and now no problem. Good luck. fredtech2

install problems

by briegull - 4/21/06 6:36 AM In reply to: 4/21/06 PC crashes trying to access the Microsoft Update site by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

This may or may not be what is interfering for YOU, but I had a number of people with an old version of InstallShield who couldn't run MS updates or install other programs (or remove programs). It turns out there is bug in their InstallShield which can be remedied by an update.

Apart from that, there's the question of the latest MS update which is screwing up Word and Save As and any number of other things - see http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,1950095,00.asp

I'd been waiting for the latest ms update mess to hit the news. Interestingly, the problems have only surfaced here in the win xp pro machine. The win xp machines seem fine.

yes explorer as bug in it when it comes to updating windows site its totally lockup without any error to report or read>

when you do get the listing each item is on the listing you see [+] click-on them go to the link and click-on it a small box will come up at the bottom of it there a link to go (tech-support) to click-on it> some time at top there a download button or bottom there a download link to get these files manuly download.

download the updates after you get 80% of all the updates exployrer will stop locking up on you at the update site when it trys to download and instill.

thats basic what i have to go through after i instill Windows Xp Home SP/2 version.

think their update site is full of bug when it come to getting new updates instill for the first time.

Microsoft Office Update Website = Bad Mojo

by j71k68 - 4/21/06 8:56 AM In reply to: 4/21/06 PC crashes trying to access the Microsoft Update site by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Part I: The initial malware removal
Part II: Fixing the MS Office problem

Part I,
My buddy recently fowled up his laptop, and being I'm the computer expert in our circle of friends I was given the task of fixing it. There have been several run-ins with various malware files that are incredibly stubborn and time consuming to rid yourself of. In his situation, he's running Windows XP Professional SP2, and MS Office 2003 Professional. Initially, I used Adware SE Personal and Spybot S&D, both available from this website: http://www.download.com/.
Each program caught several culprits, and removed nearly all of them. The ones that it did not remove, however, were ''supposedly'' scheduled to be removed when the programs ran again at startup. This never happened however, and they continually would produce pop-ups and run various other little .exe files strewn about his computer and reinfect it. Finally, I downloaded ewido anit-malware, ran the update, and restarted in safe-mode. Once there, I ran the ewido application in Full Scan Mode. Several files were detected and removed, files that many other programs did not detect. The only downside, it took nearly 2 hours for the scan to finish. I restarted Windows in normal mode, and ran HijackThis to determine any files that have been altered from their original settings.

***Keep in mind that HijackThis does not detect bad stuff per se. It simply will scan for altered files. These can include malware or adware/spyware changes, or simply additions to MSN Messenger Toolbars, Symantic Virus stuff, etc. As many of these results will be located in your Registry, you should not attempt to remove or change them unless you are positive about their nature, or have experience doing so.***

After running HijackThis and printing the log, I ran Registry Mechanic 5.1 and reran HijackThis after it completed. Many of my suspicions were proved as various registry entries were removed. While this increased performance considerably, there was still an issue with a file (can't remember the name) that was difficult to remove (wouldn't even let me delete in safe-mode). My assumption is that it appended something to a system startup registry key or .dll file (maybe even system restore), thereby disallowing it to be deleted as it was being protected by the system. My final step to remove this last threat was running my personal favorite, Bazooka Spyware Scanner. I love it because it will finish scanning in around 3-5 seconds (don't judge it). It does nothing other than provide a link to any problems found that directs you to its website. This website shows step-by-step instructions on how to manually (the best way) remove the problem file. Starting with any specific registry values to be changed/removed, and the order in which to do it to allow the deletion of the main files. After all of this (nearly a day w/ all the scans done), it was finally clean. Granted, there might be easier ways, but I love doubling up on everything.

Part II,
My buddy approached me several days later, stating that MS Word no longer works since I ''fixed'' his PC. He blamed me for causing the problem. I knew it wasn't my fault, but I humored him and told him I'll take care of it. The problem was this:
Word can be opened only in Safe Mode by clicking its executable, but an attempt at opening a .doc will result in freezes and crashes. Access, Powerpoint, Excel, etc. all worked fine, just Word was crashing.

I initially tried to use the Repair/Reinstall option in Add/Remove Programs, but after it scanned it, it returned an error with some Office Update Engine or something. Going in to Administrative Tools/Services I found the Office Engine service was disabled, so I re-enabled and ran Repair again. This time it comleted successfully, but the problem still persisted.

At this point I didn't care, so I completely uninstalled Office 03' and reinstalled from CD. However, the problem still remained. Word would lock-up and crash the system. I went to the Office Update site and tried to download updates, but at about 10% complete, during the gathering information phase I believe, IE would lock-up as well. I checked his version, IE 6 SP2, and scanned for any Windows updates. It completed successfully, and everything was current. I ran the above mentioned scanners (Adware, Spybot, ewido, bazooka, Hijack) but nothing of relevance, problem still there (a.k.a. Anger level rising). My last ditch effort, something so stupid, I clicked the ''Get Microsoft Update Today'' link at the top of the Windows Update screen. It installed an Active X control, and ran a scan of my system which took its sweet time mind you, and found that I needed Office 03' Service Pack 2, an Outlook Update, and another Office 03' update. So I downloaded and installed these updates, restarted, and low and behold, Word files opened with brilliance and clarity never before achieved by mere mortals. I pretended that the last 5 hours did not happen, went to bed, and woke up refreshed in the morning.

Hopefully, this will prevent someone from duplicating my mistake. The common problem with computer guys, we always think its something difficult and deep within the system. In many cases it is, but the simple and obvious steps should be done first to eliminate them.

God Bless,

The FInal FIx

Obviously your going to want to try everything you can before going through another reformat but if you cant get it fixed otherwise, another reformat is the only solution, and there are some key things you should be doing in order to ensure that your not getting bugs into the system before you get to updates.

It is a fact that there are virus issues that will infact prevent you from getting to the updates page to properly complete an update, and they typically come across as something much akin to a crash if not quite a total crash. The bad news is that most of the bugs that do this are very difficult to remove unless you have an expert in such things do the work for you, and its going to be cheaper to reformat then pay for the kind of expertise you may need to get rid of one of the kind of bugs I’m referring too.

While you say you are using service pack 2, I will surmise this is from your installation disk and not the downloaded update to SP2, as you are saying you cannot get to the update page. The reason why this is a point of interest is that those who do an install from an SP1 disk and do the update to SP2 from the update website are the ones who typically run into problems after a reformat. This is because before you go online with SP1, you really must shut down the messenger service in your services panel. This is disabled by default as soon as you are using SP2, so if you are formatting with SP2 included this should not even be an issue.

Just the basic things to keep in mind when doing a reformat and reinstall; first, be offline throughout the process. You don’t have to be online while installing, and as such there is no reason to be until you are ready to be online. Secondly, have an antivirus, antispyware and firewall program all on disk to be installed directly after the XP installation. They are not likely to be active until the initial updating for them is done online, but there is often at least some minor degree of protection in some way until they go through the first updating. SO do not go online until you have your security installed. The first thing to do after you do go online is allow the security programming to update immediately. After your security is updated, you are probably best to get the Windows activation process completed, and there will usually be a small icon in your taskbar reminding you as such by this point. I am assuming you are familiar with the activation process, it should be quick to take care of.

The thing here is, if the reformat and XP install went fine, and then you have your security installed, and you immediately update your security programming, XP is activated, then follow that with a trip to the Windows update page, there really should be no reason why you should not be able to begin updating. Of course, if the problem resurfaces at a later date you will certainly want to keep in mind the most recent activities, installations, etc. that you were involved in before the updating screwed up again, so keep that in mind, trips to the update page after installations to see if you are still interfacing with the update page correctly may be in order for awhile.

If you still cannot update after a fresh clean install on a bug free system, there is really only one possibility, and that is that something has gone awry in the installation for peculiar reasons. Once again, if you are working with a fresh installation, this would be very odd indeed, but it might be best at that point to have a professional to look it over, with a new install on the drive it should be easy for them to diagnose what’s corrupting your installation.

I have the same problem and ive done all the fixes as you have stated in your message, AOL doesnt like msn programmes and it could be that. MSN messenger, hotmail and microsoft upgrades dont work unless downloaded one by one from the microsoft website itself,
