Hi. I just bought a new G4 Powerbook, with Tiger. Can I use the installation discs from that to upgrade my desktop G4 (currently running 10.2.8)?
Usually the disks that are shipped with a new machine are specific to that machine.
The disks will probably boot your G4 desktop, there is a small program that runs during the install preparations. This checks to see if the machine on which you are trying to install the OS is the machine for which the disk was made. It will probably tell you that this software cannot be installed on this machine.
Be brave, boost my stock price and buy a copy of Tiger for your G4. It can be had for less than $100.

The End User License Agreement, that you accepted, grants you permission to install the software on ONE machine only.
Even though there is not a serial number or any activation to go through, it is still illegal to use it on another machine.

I understand the one-machine thing (and will stick to it -- I asked initially because I presumed the licence was one-user rather than one-machine). But in that case, why don't Apple let you upgrade the TIger you get with a new machine to Tiger family? With a one-machine agreement, it seems harsh not to.
it has something to do with the fact that the software/OS on a new machine is considered OEM and not a full retail version.
The same sort of thing applies to the Windows side of the house with a new machine.
The install disks that you have for your new machine are regarded as "Restore Disks" and are made specifically for that particular machine. The license has always been Single User but Apple have never enforced the rule.
Had your question been about a retail version of OS X, I would have answered yes, you could upgrade all your machines as the software is not machine specific.
Perhaps I should have put a smiley face after my comment. I did not mean to imply that your had one eye, wore a patch, had a parrot on your shoulder and went around saying "Arrrrgh"![]()
