I had started to defrag my comp one night a couple weeks ago, I had woken up to an Error message that Windows needed to be ReStarted to prevent any data loss.
When I reStarted, it just kept showing that screen that shows "Boot from CD" and all the comp info, but never loads windows.
I Tried the recovery boot floppy's but they didnt work. In the a:\ Prompt, I was able to pull up the directory for my 2nd drive but not my Main drive, now I really dont want to use the recovery disk that came with my computer since it would only Erase all my data on my Hard drive. I honestly dont know what to do now, should I try to just take that drive out and put it in an USB enclosure to figure out whats going on with the drive???
Thanks for the Help

which version windows and do you have a separate installation disk for windows or is it included with othe stuff on the recovery cd?
If you boot up with the recovery cd, do you get options to repair instead of 'recovery/full install'?

going into the bios/setup and change the boot sequence to be *first device=harddrive instead of cdrom. Save and Exit.
Now as the computer begins to boot up, press the F8 key a couple of times and see if you get the boot screen option window that will let you choose SAFEMODE instead of Normal.
If you time it just right, you may be able to do that since it usually is hidden by a computer vendor logo screen (such as Compaq, HP, Dell, Gateway). If you can't get the timing to be right on it, you should also be able to go into the MAIN area of the bios/setup again and you will find it at the bottom of that screen and change it to DISABLE.
If you are able to get into safemode, you can then go to Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore and restore it back to a day or so before the problem happened.
If you can't get into safemode that way, you should be able to get into the XP Recovery Console through the boot disks you say you have if they are for XP. One of the options, I believe will be to press R for Repair, and the Recovery Console will appear with a dos-like appearance for commands.
If you can get to the Recovery Console, let us know and we'll help more from that point, as one of the commands you can try would be the equivalent of a scandisk for XP called CHKDSK /P or CHKDSK /R
