hi, i am looking for any program that is capable of performing a very specific task. when i open a midi file with the program, i want it to show me which notes are being played, which sounds are being used, etc. are there any programs that can do that?
for example, if i open up a midi file for a piano song, i want it to show me, somehow (through some sort of user interface perhaps), the notes of the song.
so if i put in a midi song that plays mary had a little lamb, i should see
"E - D - C - D - E - E - EEE, ..." etc or something like that :b
i have winxp
..if i had a mac, i'd use garageband, but.. i don't :b
You can use modplug Tracker.
It shows you the notes in a spreadsheet style window. it also will show you which instruments are being used.
I think more of what you are looking for is something that will do tabulature. but if you need any help setting up modplug (http://www.modplug.com) give me a holler at:

There are a few good programs available. I use Melody Assistant and Harmony Assistant, which are avialable from http://www.myriad-online.com/. I provide a gratuitous copy of their banner page below...

Melody Assistant is dedicated to music writing, printing and rendering. Small by its price, but large by its capabilities, Melody Assistant will amaze you.
It is both:
A score editor with wide capabilities of notation
A digital synthesizer, providing quality music rendering, even without expensive hardware
A digital sound editor, to insert recorded instruments and digital audio tracks into your work.
A tablature editor, etc.
You can go to cakewalk.com and try their demo version. open any midi file, it has tablature, piano roll and staff view.. really useful...
