it's like a german car. it's not necessarily the best, but it sure costs that little extra to own one (most japanese cars are better quality-wise).
nothing wrong with that ('cause it's good at what it's supposed to do, playing music and being easy to use).
i'm not saying it's the best out there. some have better audio quality, some have better video capabilities, some may be lighter, smaller, whatever. but the ipod is an all around good package.
if you're not willing to pay the premium, don't buy one, but stop hitting on it. that simple.
what is wrong with all you people saying this player does this better, this player does that better (have you even ever owned an ipod)? buy the one you like and shut up!
have you ever thought of why every audio player is being compared to the ipod? because it sucks so bad? i don't think so.
insist on backing one thing and hating the other for the most stupid reasons.
hey
the only reason evry mp3 player is being compared to the ipod is coz of the hype surrounding the ipod. For example,in India u go out and say i have an ipod and people say wow!!
but say i have an archos AV500 .... whats that?
it is only bcoz so many people have taken ipod for granted and bought lots of them ,this makes it inevitable for people to think ipod is the best. But research for an hour or so in cnet and u will know its neither good in quality nor in aesthetics.
kumar007- "But research for an hour or so in cnet and u will know its neither good in quality nor in aesthetics."
Hmmm... gee... is that why CNET gave the ipod line all 8.3 which is the highest rating they've ever given an mp3 player? hmmm... i wonder....
Hav u seen the ratings of some other players?its not only the ipod which gets 8.3 out of 10.also look at the customer ratings - more people hav rated ipod lesser than other players.check out creative and archos.
also u can use ipod only with itunes whereas i can use my archos with itunes or any other software like Windows media player etcc
The Archos AV420 is much bulkier and has only 20 GB of memory. The iPod 5g is very small (for a HD player) and has 10 more gigs. Bigger reason: The Archos AV420 is over a year old--I believe it was about $500 when it first came out. The iPod 5g is brand new; in another year, the price will have gone down a lot as well.
For $300, the iPod is very well priced compared to similar hard drive players that are bulkier and have only 20 gigs of memory. Of course, you will want to buy an AC Adapter for $30 that comes packed in with pretty much every other mp3 player on the market. And you might want to buy an Invisible Shield or something to keep it from scratching... And maybe a $50 FM tuner as well...
*Warning this post contains A LOT of satire*
I love the ipod Video!
I'm an Optometrist and i must say i love apple and they're newest ipod video.
I dont own one but i love it's results. Every day people my clients come to me getting blinder and blinder through the results of watching tv shows and porno on their ipod videos.
Reenactment:
So Frank how's that new 72 inch flat screen plasma doing for ya?
i dont know i've been watching tv on my ipod video, i even found a way to connect my 7.1 surround and dvd player to my ipod video so i can get that theater experience only at one eighth of it's size...i call it...'mini-imax'
So you see why i love the ipod video? business is booming for me. Never have i sold so many glasses and contact lenses
I don't think the iPod 5g sucks; in fact, I think it is currently the best value for a hard drive player on the market. But there are still enough downsides to the new iPod (and iPods in general) that lead me to wait for upcoming players (most specifically, the Gigabeat X series).
1. No WMA support - not a huge problem for some people, but a lot of my music is in the WMA format, and I don't want to have to convert it all
2. Cheap, scratchable casing - This is simply unacceptable in a $300 product. U-N-A-C-C-E-P-T-A-B-L-E.
3. Everyone has one - I understand that some people like things that make them ''fit in'', but I prefer something more unique and attention-grabbing. Something that everyone else has is not attention-grabbing.
4. It gets outdated - If you get a brand new iPod, you will look cool for a few months. When Apple releases a newer one 6 months later, you will be stuck with the old, outdated one. I'm looking for a DAP that will last me a couple years. Things that few people know about will look fresh and new years after they're released.
5. iTunes - Say all you like about iTunes being the ''easiest-to-use'' software, but nothing is simpler than the ability to just drag and drop music files to the player from your computer. I don't want to be tied to using proprietary software, no matter how well it works.
6. Lack of included essential extras - Not a huge deal, but at the very least, you'll have to buy an AC adapter for the iPod ($30). The current Gigabeat also comes with a docking cradle ($50 for the iPod's). That's $80 you'd have to spend on an iPod that you wouldn't have to spend on players like the Gigabeat.
So there's my reasons. The iPod 5g does not suck; it is undeniably one of the nicest hard drive players on the market. No iPod haters can say anything about it being ''underfeatured and overpriced'' anymore (unless you count the lack of an FM tuner, which is a very small nitpick). Also, do not criticize it for its poor
video -playing abilities. The iPod is for music; PVPs are for videos.
However, as there are still issues like thse six that hurt the iPod. While these flaws may be minor to some people, they are enough to convince me to wait for the Gigabeat X30 (or whatever other competitors are preparing).
I watched the Cnet video of Jobs introducing the video iPod... slick sales pitch. But, I predict few will buy the Video iPod so they can pay $2 to watch an hour (40 min sans commercials) of Desperate Housewives they missed.
Most homes have cable TV and for $5/mo you get a DVR that with one click can record the whole season of Desp Housewives. Besides, who wants to hold a video iPod in front of their face to watch TV at low resolution? Oh, I forgot about those who use a cell phone while they drive! But, now they can watch live TV on their cell phones.
No, I think Apple is ''reaching'' this time. The iPod made music available to active people and those temporarily inactive while waiting, traveling, etc. It is cool to be able to stick the MP3 player in a pocket and go about your business. Only a small fraction of these customers will buy a video iPod because you gotta have the player out of your pocket and in your hand to use the video part. It requires too much involvement on the part of the user.
If a buyer gets beyond the ''coolness'' of the product and thinks about how it will be used (and the cost of TV programs), they'll pass on video on an MP3 player. Apple didn't hit a home run with this product.
It's April 2006 now and Video iPods are flying off retailers shelves!
The video is a great hook and most folks are converting their home movies and studio DVD's into MPEG-4 files to watch on buses and planes.
Can I offer you some salt for that crow?
Video is a great hook, mostly because few people read the fine print that says "2 hours of battery life". And considering that most iPod owners don't know what MPEG-4 is, I highly doubt many of them have converted their DVDs to put on their iPod.
In the above post (which I posted several months ago), I said not to criticize the iPod for its poor video-playing features. I would like to correct myself. If Apple is hyping the iPod's video-playing ability, then it shouldn't be some tacked-on extra, it should be a quality feature. No matter what the case, 2 hours sucks for battery life, and all the necessary conversion of videos completely destroys the point of the iPod's ease-of-use, which is supposedly its main selling point.
You can't get much larger in a vertical format, and it looks like it has a pretty good screen. Did you look at the specs, or look firsthand? And, does anyother mp3 player look that cool? No!
Cool looks don't mean squat if you're looking for an mp3 player. The ipod video is overpriced; it's just a thing to flaunt and show off for the hungry masses.
