Anyone else waiting for Conroe?

by balajiviswanath82 - 3/23/06 4:53 PM

I've been tempted to get a new Dell XPS 600 or an AMD 4800+ (or better) system for the past few months. With the news of the Conroe processor coming out this fall, I'm thinking of waiting. Anyone else in this dilema? I don't care much about the Vista delay. I just want the biggest bang for my buck (willing to spend up to $2800 US).

I presently own a mighty Dell Dimension 8200, with a P4 1.7 GHz, 512 Mb RDRAM, 32 Mb video card, and about 240 Gb storage. It has served me well, but I can't wait to switch to something new.

The BEST bang for the buck certainly is *not* Dell

If you are willing to spend $2,800 Dell is NOT going to get you the most for your dollar. I mean, they have great prices on the lower-end machines but those XPS systems are overpriced, personally. Try maybe Monarch Computer, or even Overdrive PC. Are you much of a gamer? I personally am going to wait for both Conroe and AM2 and even Vista to get released, but at least wait for AM2: The new AMD socket, due the 6th day of the 6th month. Conroe is *supposed* to get better than the current Intels which are not so hot. I'm assuming that if you are going to spend 2800 dollars I'm going to assume that you want to keep this machine for a while, looking at your current Dell. No offense meant, really. I am a *really* patient person, I've been waiting a long time for a new computer, lol. Four years currently. I think this year is going to be my year!

Temptation Vs Patience

by balajiviswanath82 - 3/25/06 6:14 AM In reply to: The BEST bang for the buck certainly is *not* Dell by ikjadoon

I agree that the XPS is overpriced, but I did like the peace fo mind that came with their warranty. I've helped a few people buy Dells, and they've never had any problems.

Like you, I'm been putting off buying a computer for a while. As for patience, I have less, but I'd rather wait than feel like I'm ''stuck'' with a computer that I could buy today. I'll definitely buy before Vista comes out. I'm in no rush to catch the first Vista wave.

I've had the same feeling

I hate getting into like a dead-end like that. Well, if you are not going to wait for Vista, which is now rumoured to get released Q1 '07 (@$%$#!) I think it would at least be better to see what happens with AM2 and Conroe.... The only thing that I persoanlly am worried is video in Vista. I've heard about thie HDCP stuff and even needing new Video cards, but I'm not 100% sure on the latter.

sure you wanna wait for conroe?

by jacnet347 - 3/25/06 10:45 AM In reply to: Temptation Vs Patience by balajiviswanath82

if you are willing to wait for conroe , then you may be tempted to wait for conroe's quaid core processor and then for conroe extreme edition which will come out by next year end. There is a possiblity that you may have to keep on waiting, maybe for ever ,for there's always the possibility of something better coming out in the immediate future!!!!

I faced the same problem. I didn't wanna buy a computer after spending over 2000-3000 $ and then see it become obsolete by the end of the year. And i have been waiting for over 6 yrs now. I use a p3 with 64 MB ram.

I finally got tired of waiting and bought an AMD athlon 3200+ processor and asus a8ne mobo with 1 gb ram.( it didn't cost me much)a few days ago.I also addeed a 250 GB HDD,a dvd writer and a WinFast DTV2000H to my system. All the other products i used from my old computer. I will soon add a geforce 7900 gt or 7900gtx graphics card to it .So i could record/watch Tv and play the latest games. That would satisfy all my needs for the moment.
And two yrs. from now i am gonna dump my system ( except my graphics card, dvd writer and perhaps even my tuner card) and then build a system with conroe extreme edition CPU.
Even though conroe's are coming out this year end i don't think its a good idea to immediately go out and buy a technology that isn't adeqautely tested and then face all kinds of problems.I would rather wait and let intel fix all the problems that are gonna emerge with new technology and then go out and buy it.
I have thought about this very issue for a long time and finally decided that it's no longer a good idea to make a one time purchase of the most expensive top of the line system and then hope that my computer won't get obsolete for another 5 or 6 yrs. No matter what you buy , it will get obsolete in 2-3 yrs.So its much better to buy a mid- to - high end system ( that will satisfy all your present needs) and replace it every second or third year rather than waste all the money at once buying an expensive system and then getting stuck with that system for another 5 -6 yrs. This way you don't have to worry about your system becoming obsolete and this method is actually cheaper in the long run!!
But i agree tht conroe is a very good CPU and it will be much faster and better than the current CPUs available. Also if you aren't a gamer and don't worry about the speed and you just want conroe because of its other good features( like low power consumption, low temp.etc,etc.) then you should wait for conroe.

I am certainly not an expert on these issues and i may well be wrong here but i doubt that!

I took the plunge

by balajiviswanath82 - 3/27/06 2:58 AM In reply to: sure you wanna wait for conroe? by jacnet347

I took the plunge and ordered a Dell. This computer will do for a year until I get my kick-ass system. My wife will be using this new Dell in a year, so we both have a computer.

Here are the specs, all for $1440 US ($1800 Canadian), delivered, taxes in: Dell 9150, 2.8GHz Dual Core 820, 1Gb RAM, 250 Gb HD, 19" Ultrasharp monitor, 16x DVD-ROM, 16x DVD/CD burner, 3.5" floppy with 13-in-1 media card reader, nVidia 256 Mb 6800 video card, Audigy Soundcard with 2.1 speakers.

Sure, it's not an Athlon 64 X2. I priced a system with equivalent specs, and the Dell seemed like a good deal to me. I don't needs blazing performance out of this one. That'll come with my new system next spring. Can't wait for the new Dell to be delivered in 5-7 days.

XPS 600 is a kick ass machine

by twalsh3 - 4/6/06 8:10 PM In reply to: Anyone else waiting for Conroe? by balajiviswanath82

If you have been thinking about getting an XPS 600 I would say its a great decision. If you get the Pentium D 9xx's series processor they run alot cooler than the 8xx's series and 4mb of cache. It has an SLI motherboard and will beat any other high end vendor such as Alienware, Voodoo, and Overdrive. I do work for Dell so if your looking for that type of system man, I can hook you up. Email me at twalsh3@mail.usf.edu if your interested.

(NT) ''I do work for Dell''

by nathanpsz2 - 4/6/06 8:17 PM In reply to: XPS 600 is a kick ass machine by twalsh3

That explains a lot. Just look at Cnet's review of it:

http://reviews.cnet.com/Dell_XPS_600/4505-3118_7-31457921-2.html?tag=nav

As you can see, the Alienware (now a Dell), Overdrive, Velocity Micro, etc. all thrashed the Dell in the gaming tests. If I were going to spend $2800 on a PC, I'd build my own and overclock it for max performance.

As usual...

a big difference between what Cnet's reviewer concludes and User reviews, which I think are always important to look at too.

Conroe is a Glorafied Pentium III!! nuff sayd.
ConRoe has a huge catch but it neads a DCA(Direct Conect Archatecure) to get rid of bottlenecks. Intel Is In Trubble! Intel will loose more share in 06/07!
