I think this: all printers are "good", some better ones to others, but, this canon is very good for all, excellent, AND compatibles cartridges VERY ECONOMICS AND USEFULL.
That it's my opinion (sorry my english)

I have two HP's, one wide format, 1220c and one smaller deskjet, 3650. I am reasonably happy. I would prefer a better color ink arrangement, as when one is gone, they are all gone,
I do like the newer archival inks, but wish they would offer them on their older printer, and really get frustrated with the number of cartiages. Every time you get a new printer, it uses a different cartiage.
I would like to see these standardized, so I would only have to buy one set of cartiages, and they would fit all of my printers.
delighted with the print quality - with the correct paper - Olmec satin finish from www.ici-imagedata.com
Am I the only one who thinks printer companies have way to many different sizes of ink cartiages?
as a person who has more than one printer, it would really be nice if they standardized it a little more! And if they would separate the colors, so if you use a lot of one color on a printer, you do not have to replace the entire set when one goes dry!
I've had my Epson CX3200 for a couple of years now and I like it very much. I have since bough aanother newer computer, a Dell, that came with a dell printer but I still do my printing on my old computer with my Epson!
I've been printing w/Canon for about 5 years ,I started
out w/S800 now I use the S9000 ,this printer prints up
to 13x19. The print quality is excellent .Canon only
offers as archival/lightfastness the Photo Paper Pro
w/25 years fade-resistance. This is the down side of
canon paper unlike Epson which offers a wide-range of
paper options. I've been thinking of switching over to
Epson for this reason. However I've been shopping around
for papers that is compatible w/canon. These are the
papers I use w/excellent results;Inkpress,Legion,NCR
(This paper I found in of all places Kmart ,this paper
offers Archival/Fade resistant etc.etc.& prints verywell),Epson,Strathmore,Hahnemuhle,& Breathing Color.
I hope 10 years from now I'll know the print longevity
of these papers.

all in one the printer is fast, great software ,easy update sections, the ink last's longer than either the Epson or the H.P's that i have used in the past. The photo printer using the "photo" cartridge is exellent{i use the lexmark paper}.The added voice menu and ink notification is really handy and pretty darn accurate. Company should hire me as a spokes person 8-)
HP all the way...HP Photosmart 7550 and HP Officejet 7210 All-in-one. Love them both. Had a Brother printer broke down after 60 days was able to trade up to HP thru Office Max, they rock.
I have a Lexmark X73, my general printer, a Canon ip6600D for printing small photos, and an HP DesignJet 130nr for printing large photos and drawings. Each is good for various purposes.
The Lexmark is an all-in-one printer and has a built-in scanner, good, but not great. It can also make copies, which comes in handy at times. It does a nice job of printing documents and is generally thrifty on ink. One nice feature is that documents can be set up to print from last to first page, so they come out collated.
The Canon does a wonderful job of printing photos, which is what it was purchased for. It will print up to 8.5x11 in full bleed, which is great. With its six reservoirs, it does a great job of colour matching; however, it seems to go through the Photo Magenta a bit fast. Maybe it's my subjects, or the size of the prints, but that ink cartridge just went very quickly. The Photo Cyan is also going fast. Having two trays for different photo stocks is also nice, so that I can have 4x6 and 8.5x11 stock to choose from in different trays at the same time.
The HP is extremely thrifty on ink, despite the size of the prints that it makes (19x24"). Only one cartidge is down 1/4 (again, the photo magenta). It prints quite quickly for the size of the prints, too. The downside is the difficulty in lining up the sheets for feeding into the back of the printer. I tried feeding them into the front, but it resulted in buggered front edges of the prints, not a satisfactory product. The printer also has a hard time picking up some types of paper from the tray, due to the slipperiness of the backing; these must be fed from the alternate feed tray singly.
Some of these problems could be eliminated by using the roll feeder; however, that would result in a lot of wasted stock.
I use an hp photosmart 7550 series. The feature I like best is that the ink jets are incorporated in the cartridges, which prevents clogging, unlike the epson printer I had previously, which, having the jets built into the printer, couldn't be relied upon to deliver an even flow of ink to the paper. My regular attempts at cleaning the jets met with indifferent success, and after wasting more expensive photo paper than I care to think of, I finally consigned the hapless epson to the rubbish bin.
My paper wastage due to printer problems is now zero.
I have had pretty good luck with this printer, other than it likes to use ink a lot.Does good job on most photos, sometimes on full page photos ,it is off a little.Overall the best printer in the house as compared to the other three.
Canon Pixma ip4000R,Has separate color cartridges with a black and photo black cartridge. Very happy with its performance..
I've owned numerous printers and have found that HPs are still the best. Other printers haver improved over the years but there is still noone that designs more reliable, high quality printers than HP. They test their printers more than anyone and the results show. The print system with hardware, supplies and paper is all designed together to deliver trouble free results. I have better things to do than worry about my output.
Epson 1280. Concerning photo paper: I take exception to your referring to third party papers as papers from Kodak, Ilford and etc. Third party papers in my opinion are those papers with 'private brand' names like CompUSA brand and etc.
