Cell phone 411 (freebie tip)

by MacHugger - 4/5/06 10:12 AM

I was listening to Money 101 on the way into work and - I think it's Bob McCormick who hosts - said there is a service you can dial on your cell phone that will give you 411 information for free. I haven't tried it yet except to call the number and hear the recording but I will eventually actually use it. I think he said you will occasionally hear an ad but he claims to have used it about 100 times and only heard an ad maybe twice. I think the cell companies charge $1.50 or something if you just dial 411.

The number is 1-800-411-SAVE (7283)

Funny how I kept rewording this post so it didn't sound like SPAM. :-) But rest assured, I have nothing to do with the service, though I think I wish I did if it really does work like 411.

Brian Cooley

I forgot to mention, I think they frequently have Brian Cooly speaking on Money 101 regarding tech news. Does he just call in to a small list of various radio shows when they need a tech advisor? How exactly is his role defined at CNET?

There is also 1-800-FREE-411 (1-800-3733-411) that works as well, with a little ad placement before you are given the number.

I use 800-373-3411

You have to listen to a short ad IF you choose to have them connect you. If you write down the number no ad and it's completely free!

I have been using this a few times a month for a few years.

Nice to know there are several different options out there.

Now will I remember any of these when I actually have to use it.... :(

Fading Memory

I used to have a fabulous memory and then... what was I saying?

Anyway, assuming these numbers work in Canada, the only way for me to use them would be to program into my cell phone. That might work.

Yes, using 1-800-411-SAVE for directory assistance is indeed a way of saving money. Live friendly operators give out accurate phone numbers in one click. Aside from being free, their service is fast and all you have to do is listen to a short advertisement. I've tried it once and I'm sure that this service is what I'll be using in the next coming days. It's for you to try it.
