Digital cameras: S2 IS questions

Hope the S4 has the Foveon X3 chip...

by prodesma - 4/3/06 7:22 AM In reply to: ok enough...bs by Joe WPB

That ALONE is worth an upgrade. I can't believe pretty much only one Sigma and one Kodak camera have offered this.

Maybe it's not the X3 chip anymore, but whatever Foveon is calling it these days.

back to topic (sorta) can we all just agree that digicams produce MORE noise at 800 ISO and that the DIGIC II processor is helpful in REDUCING that ADDED noise? Okay, i think i just contradicted myself like three times in one sentence... but anyways.

As to the 3MP enlargements, I haven't seen any so I can't judge for myself. I'd have to think it's a stretch because my cropped areas can get grainy at 5"x7". Maybe Snapfish and others have a special development process? Transfer to slide and process from that(?) for lower res enlargements? I do know someone (whose opinion I trust) that says he got an online enlargement that turned out great from a very low res picture. It can happen.

ssaileanu, I can't answer about wide lenses, i don't snap with them and don't have one... sorry.

In the meantime

Gentlemen,

While I'm enjoying your lively discussion I am still to find anything that will help me in choosing a wide-angle lens.

Still, I want to thank you all for your imput.

One more thing: on one of the many, many websites I've visited (http://www.dpreview.com/news/0602/06022111canons3is.asp) towards the bottom of the page there is something about the S3 having the 9-point AiAF. Amazon says the same thing: but when I asked Canon's tech support they said it's not an option on the S3. I lean towards Canon's tech support but I still hope they're wrong. Any thoughts?

Thanks again.

FlexiZone

It sure looks like the Canon tech is correct.

Just below the AiAF paragraph is the FlexiZone paragraph which better describes the S2 and S3 cameras.

AiAF is usually reserved for DSLR cameras.

If anyone finds an AiAF on the S3, let us know....

not so fast

by ssaileanu - 4/4/06 4:16 AM In reply to: FlexiZone by snapshot2 Moderator

I've sent Canon a second email, trying to make sure the first response was correct.

Well, second response was "We apologize for the wrong information. The S3 IS does have the 9 point AiAF feature."

So, which one is correct? Again Two websites, Amazon and DPReview.com state that S3 does have the 9-point AiAF. I'll send a 3rd email to Canon, who knows?

Interesting

While looking for something else yesterday I ran across more Canon cameras that are using AiAF 9 point auto focus:

A430, A520, A620, A700, A80

Even the lowly $150 A410 has AiAF 5 point.

Apparently while we weren't paying attention, Canon has been putting AiAF 9 point into most of their cameras.

Regarding noise in P&S. Yes, we can all agree that noise

by Kiddpeat - 4/3/06 9:26 AM In reply to: Hope the S4 has the Foveon X3 chip... by prodesma

is higher at 800 than 400 or lower. The issue, in my mind, is whether or not the higher ISO allows one to get pictures in low light that you could not otherwise get.

Noise is always relative. If the noise at an 800 ISO setting on an S3 is about the same as that on other cameras at 400, then you have gained a full stop in shutter speed. That may be enough to get that photo without a blur. THAT's the big issue. Noise in low light won't be terribly visible since it will appear mostly in the darker areas of the image. Now, if Canon would put my 20D's low light performance into a P&S with an articulated LCD ........

I am apologizing for the poor behavior that you have encountered in this forum. Don't feel too bad cause I get attacked all the time when I make a post. Please note the name. He will do it again and again even though he has no knowlegde of photography. Also the post suddenly get deleted cause the mod favors this punk. I think he is the mods son or something. He always belittle peoples intelligence regarding just about any subject. I am sorry he started on you and I am familiar with your excellent work. Best wishes.
