98se to xp

I am presently running windows 98 se on a machine with 700 MHZ and 384 MB of ram. Can I up grade to Windows Xp?
If so,what are there any concerns?

What is the min and max. ram I should run with either system?

Try running this test(http://www.pcpitstop.com/xpready/default.asp) on the 98 machine. It should give you idea if any bumps are ahead.

512 seems to work best with XP, but check if your board can handle it. Win98 hits a wall at 512.

Thanks, I ran the test you recommender and the test indicated that my BIOS was dated before 01/01/2000. Everything else was above the basic requirements, so I suppose I will have to be content with 98SE.

Will the other 128 Meg of ram make any difference for me?

This does not preclude the use of XP, it just notes a possible issue. See if an update exists.

Depends on the usage. Try it at 384, if it drags pop in another module.

After some thought I believe that if I were to spend any money, it would be better spent on a new system, so for now I am content to stay where I am.

There are a few problems which may be encountered in this upgrade. The components that you mentioned should work well, but there are other considerations.
Primarily the driver software for the hardware on your computer, i.e. your motherboard, sound, video, modems, etc. Be sure that you can find Xp drivers for your hardware. You will need to identify each item and start the search, if you want to predetermine all issues.
Or if you're the adventurous type, you can go ahead and try to install XP, then see what doesn't work, and go forward from there.
I would first determine whether the mainboard is xp compatible. Go to the mfg. website and check. If the MB is not xp compatible, you're probably stuck with win 98 or upgrading the mainboard.
