installing sotware on Windows 98

by brettmosleymaui - 4/1/06 4:42 AM

I realize I should know this, but forget easily these days! When I download a program (like from Download.com) and get a message like "Thank you for downloading program.... Then how do I install the program so it can be opened and used???

"save to" allows you to choose a location. I keep a new folder on my desktop "downloads". If it is a zip file, you must have WinZip. I prefer WinRar which allows a look as well as handling zip-rar-cab and other compressed files. If it is self-extracting, choose a desktop folder to "extract to". If it is a usual .EXE, just double click it.

Once you download the file

and it's on your harddrive, look for the extension of the file. If it's an .exe type, you should be able to just click it and will self-install. If it's a .zip type, you will need another program to unzip it in order to get to the .exe file that usually is setup.exe in order to click and install that way.

There are some pretty good free unzipping programs also at download.com if you don't already have one that you purchased such as winzip.

Once you have the program installed, and if you like it, you can save the downloaded .exe or .zip file to a cd or floppy if it's small enough. I usually will change the file name to PROGRAM.EXE or PROGRAM.ZIP in order to make sure I can remember what the program was since many times they are pretty vague, obviously substituting PROGRAM for the actual name of the program itself. Then I move that file to a new folder called SAVETHESE and wait until I have enough of them to burn to a cd for safekeeping rather than waste a whole cd for one downloaded file.

If you don't like the program once you install it, uninstall it via Add/Remove Programs and then delete the downloaded file.
