Disabling MSN Messenger from Startup

by anisetteIG - 3/31/06 1:41 PM

Hi. I have tried several different ways to disable MSN messenger from my system startup. START/RUN/MSCONFIG/START UP. I have also tried using System Mechanic 6 and deleted it with Webroots Spy Sweeper. Nothing seems to work. I do, however, know when it tries to readd itself. Everytime I start up Yahoo Messenger I get a warning message from my Spy Sweeper that MSN is attempting to add itself again. I have gone through my Options in both Yahoo and MSN and can not find anything that will prevent this from happening. I find no association between the two programs whatsoever as a matter of fact. Is there a program or XP trick that can solve this problem once and for all? Any help would be much appreciated. And thanks in advance to all who take the time to kindly respond. Thank you.

An easier way, one click. . .

Two choices.

Uninstall it in Control Panel, Add/Remove, Add/Remove Windows Components, uncheck it.

Go to my site below, scroll down to the Free Software link, and get the Shoot the Messenger software.

BEWARE

Uninstalling Windows Messenger can affect other components. It's better left in place. Also, Shoot The Messenger refers to the Messenger Service which has nothing to do with Windows Messenger.

I've uninstalled. . .

Messenger on all (5) of my desktops and laptops. Zero problems. I've never found anything dependant on Messenger that I couldn't live without. Including the popups on my desktop when I wasn't on line.

The program I list disables it, as you would in Computer Management. I'd rather just get rid of it all together.

As I said, my five computers live happily without it.

Question

by anisetteIG - 3/31/06 4:25 PM In reply to: Follow these instructions by Kono Kusotare

Thank you for your response Kono. Before I follow these instructions, I would like to get some clarification on something. I am only interested in disabling MSN Messenger from auto-starting with my computer. I still want to use the program though. If I perform your instructions, will I just be disabling MSN from my startup; or will I be preventing the program from running completely? Thanks again for your time.

To Clarify

by Kono Kusotare - 3/31/06 5:07 PM In reply to: Question by anisetteIG

Yes those instructions were to completely disable the use of MSN Messenger. To simply keep it from starting each time you logon, dbl-click the icon and choose tools, options, click preferences tab. Under General, clear the Run This Program When Windows Starts check box. This removes the MSMSGS value from the Hot Key Current User registry. If you don't have a Passport associated with your user account, you can't open Windows Messenger to make this change until you complete the .NET Passport Wizard. If you also find that Messenger is running when you use Outlook Express, clear the check box, Allow this program to run in the background. In outlook express, you can open tools, options, on the general tab clear Automatically Logon to Windows. To disable the contacts pane in Outlook Express choose view, layout, and clear the Contacts check box.

Tried that already.

Thank you again for your quick response Kono. Unfortunately, I went through the steps you just suggested prior to me making my initial with the exception of disabling in Outlook Express. Upon opening Outlook Express, the box in question was already unselected. I don't use it anyway. I'm on AOL and use their built in email client. What puzzles me is why my Spy Sweeper detects that MSN Messenger is trying to re-add itself to my system startup only when I log into Yahoo Messenger. I recall hearing some scuttlebutt about the two programs running hand in hand. Possibly this event has already taken place. I'm quite positive that my Options are correctly set. I'm just in need of either a program or a command that will terminate its ability to keep bouncing back and try to re-add itself. I've been trying to fix this for quite some time now. This is the first time I've sought outside help. Again, thank you for your time and any further solutions would greatly appreciated. Dave

If the Yahoo site

by Kono Kusotare - 3/31/06 6:35 PM In reply to: Tried that already. by anisetteIG

is responsible for reenabling it, add wwww.messenger.yahoo.com to the restricted sites zone. Open internet options, click security, restricted sites, sites, and add the URL. This will prevent the website from adding/changing anything to/on your computer.
