text size in Internext Explorer 6

by jconner - 6/25/05 12:35 PM

For some reason when I set the text size to smaller under the view option and then exit, it always comes back as largest. How do you permanently set this?

I thought perhaps cookies were saving it and then reseting it when I went back to visit a site, but I deleted all of them, set text size to smaller, did a normal exit, but no good.

Everytime I reboot it goes back to large??

Anybody have a fix for this?

Thanks

Does this happen

by MarkFlax Moderator - 6/25/05 12:59 PM In reply to: text size in Internext Explorer 6 by jconner

in every web site? And does it happen in a word processor program, (like Word), and Notepad, or your desktop?

With web sites you are really under the control of the designer of the web pages. They state what font sizes, style etc they want their text to appear as. As you have found out, you can temporarily override their choices from the View command, (although I don't think this works if the designer is using style sheets).

However, there are things you can try, by changing settings for your desktop and see if you can get one that is more pleasing for you.

In Desktop Properties, (either right click the desktop, goto Properties, or goto Start > Control Panel then double clicking Display).

1 - Click the Settings tab and move the slider under Screen resolution one notch at a time to the right. Click Apply. Depending on your monitor and setup, you may be asked to reboot your computer before the changes take place. Your screen resolution will become higher and everything looks smaller, icons, windows, taskbar, etc.

2 - Click the Appearance tab, and see what the ''Font size'' is. If it is Large or Extra large, reduce it.

3 - Under the same tab, click Advanced, and explore the different ''Items'' to see which one(s) allow you to change font size; eg ''Message box'' allows the font to be changed and/or the font size to be amended. Beware though, keep track of your changes as you can soon end up with electric blue large fonts on a pink background, which may not be to your liking.

Some other browsers offer a more immediate way to change text size temporarily; eg Firefox allows CTRL and ''+'' to enlarge or CTRL and ''-'' to reduce font sizes.

I can revisit the site multiple times without it changing. Only resets following a re-boot, which suggests to me it in the registry somewhere or in a cookie being loaded.

Thanks,
John

If you have a scrolling mouse:

by weAponX - 6/25/05 1:13 PM In reply to: Does this happen by MarkFlax Moderator

put the mouse pointer into a body of text of unsanted size, and hit the CTRL key - use the scroll button to choose your desired text size.

If you do not have a scrolling mouse, in IE, open one IE instance, and go View>Text Size>Medium

Or, do what the guy before me said, :p

If you are using a custom font size for your desktop, you have to make sure that it is not affecting your program interfaces: If you set the fonts too large, when you open certain programs, some of the program controls will be inaccessable, so be careful how you set it.

Another thing to check would be, if you have "Clear Type Tuning" installed. This is a custom feature developed for laptops/LCD displays only, not PC's using a standard monitor. Shut off your "Clear Type" tuning if you are using it, it is accessable via Control Panel.

I think I said that if I change it using view-text size-smaller it will not stay. I am looking for a way to permanetly set the view - text size - to smaller so that will be the default. Ctrl is just another way to get there. I can temporarly change it to smaller, I want a permanent default.

jconner, Found this doing a search and maybe it's applicable to your problem.

IE (Internet Explorer) Text size/ font size problem

Problem: The font size in Internet Explorer was continually resetting to the "smallest" text size. I would have to go under the IE font size, and change it back to the size I wanted. This would last for a little while, and then IE would suddenly go back to smallest.

Solution: I found out the culprit was my text setting in Eudora. In Eudora, I went to Tools->Font-> and under the message box, I changed the text size to "smaller" (the size I wanted). This solved my problem. Every time I was running Eudora it was overriding my IE settings.

If it's not just disregard my reply.

Not using Endora - Outlook, but that seems like its on the right track. I've not added any new software since switching to COMCAST ISP and I'm beginning to think maybe it is related to their plugins to IE6. It stays to what I set it to until a reboot. Thank you for looking. Its an interesting problem.

Ah, I gotcha

Just open ONE IE window, and set it to the "smaller" size, it should stay.

If it does not stay, then some program that uses the IE Shell is shoving it back to default size, or, you have a DLL file running as a "home page"- So, if you are using Eudora, that might do it, I have about three programs that use IE as s shell for a viewer. Check your Homepage, I have seen a virus that appears to be the Firefox Hom,e Page, but it is not and ghod knows what the link is to: I only caught it because the image did not look right, and when I checked the link it was pointing to somewhere in "dot-ru"

You might want to re-install IE, see if you can download the version you are using as a network install, then if you re-install it, this may fix the problem.

Did you check the clear type thing though? If clear type is on, it WILL keep resetting the page to the "medium" size.

Arg, there are a bunch of things that can make IE keep resetting, I just checked through a bunch of preferences.

Maybe you can just go to the "Advanced Settings" for IE, and hit "Restore Defaults" - And then reset any special settings you had? I do not know if "reset defaults" from that property sheet will affect the entire program, though.

jconner, Here's an explantion of Clear Type.

Using Clear Type

Right click on the windows desktop and select properties.

Select the appearance tab and click on the Effects button. Put a check mark beside "use the following method to smooth the edges of screen fonts and in the drop down window choose ClearType.

Its more useful for LCD users and laptop users.

I forgot all about this too

by weAponX - 3/30/06 1:31 PM In reply to: Re: Clear Type by Tufenuf

For Laptops or Flat Screens, there is a Clear Type Font Tool, it is a "power toy" let me see if there is a link. Ah-Here is is:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

Just download the Clear Type Tool and it will fix upo your laptop or flatscreen, but do not use it for a regular CRT- It will mess you up!

setting text size in IE 6

by Da_Newb - 7/6/05 7:31 PM In reply to: text size in Internext Explorer 6 by jconner

Try this: go to "Tools" in the internet explorer menu, then click on "Internet Options", under the "General" tab click on "Accessibility", under "Formatting" check the box that says "Ignore font sizes specified on Web pages". So now you can set your text size to what ever you want and it should stay that way.

Use Firefox...

by trkcoach22 - 4/15/06 8:09 AM In reply to: text size in Internext Explorer 6 by jconner

You might think about using Firefox instead of IE.
It seems to be a little bit faster and it doesn't have all the security breaches that IE has...so you might want to check it out.
I have been using it for years now and the extensions are really cool, just pick the ones you want or ask someone who has it.
It takes a little bit of getting used to but it's much better IMHO.
