Question regarding domains.

by mike62 - 3/17/06 12:58 PM

I was interested in getting a domain with my name perhaps just for email and playing around with no real business application. Could anyone explain basically some benefits of having such a site?

Also, any particular affordable no hassle companies you would recommend? I see GoDaddy.com the most and it seems affordable.

Any downsides?

Thanks.

GoDaddy

is who I went with for my domain name...they had the most reasonable pricing for up to ten years.

Once I had the domain name, I shopped around for a good hosting site, and decided after shopping around and comparing packages and prices, I went with http://www.earthlink.com because they offered the best for my needs based on how much space I wanted. It came to about $10 for 2GB of space with no ads at the time. Not sure if it would be any higher in price now since I've had it for about a year or so now.

Many of the hosting sites have ads required if you go with their lower priced packages and you don't get very much webspace to use either.

Benefits...

by Sovereign Moderator - 3/21/06 4:01 PM In reply to: Question regarding domains. by mike62

Well, the benefit is the reason why you would want it in the first place. It's always very "cool" to have an email address firstname@lastname.com or something like that. If you're talking about a website, you could put family pictures on there... a chat to talk to other family members, a guestbook, interesting news, games, etc. It's not all that difficult to setup the email. If you get your domain at godaddy.com(which I recommend), as soon as its activated, you can begin routing your email to your current account... for another small charge, you can get a "real" email account that not just forwards your email, but you have a place you can check it independend form your current email. If you're willing to pay for that, you might as well just get a hosting for $5 a month, and set your email up on there, then for almost the same price you get a email and webspace to make a website... all you need then is a website ;)

Summary: about $9 a year for domain + $5 a month for hosting = your email address, and hosting (website).

GoDaddy and Gandi good, iPowerWeb bad

by liozzi - 3/30/06 12:56 PM In reply to: Question regarding domains. by mike62

I use GoDaddy, Gandi.net, and recently tried iPowerWeb.

I have no complaints about GoDaddy or Gandi.net. GoDaddy is the cheaper of the two. So Between them I'd have to recommend GoDaddy.

iPowerWeb is the worst registration/hosting company I have ever dealt with. Their process is slow and buggy. Their support is even worse.

GODADDY offensive

by aksv - 4/5/06 6:56 PM In reply to: GoDaddy and Gandi good, iPowerWeb bad by liozzi

GODADDY.com sort of scares me. I transferred my domain there, just for registration, and the very first day I received an email with some info for a radio show their president hosts. It was doing a show on how great the idea surrounding Girls Gone Wild is, how it was a simple idea that made a fortune. I called them up and asked if I could get some money back if I move within 60 days. I had signed up for 7 years, and they said I couldn't get any money back. Something scary about their ideas and the way they do business. They're cheap, but it all feels a bit sleazy.

Downside

by aksv - 4/5/06 7:00 PM In reply to: Question regarding domains. by mike62

Maybe it wouldn't bother some people, but I have come to think of Godaddy as customer-unfriendly. If you decide to move from them, good luck getting any kind of refund. Plus, they are big in the After-market. I don't like the idea of a company that supports something like Girls Gone Wild having access to my domain name. They are nice when you sign up, but I don't feel comfortable with them.
