Like a bad hair piece...

...you only notice the bad ones. You really don't notice the 300 cell phone users that pass you without incident. It's that one guy/girl who has no idea they are at a four-way stop, or the idiot doing 35 in a 55 mph zone, or the moron who looks around with the cell stuck to their head like they just woke up and are suddenly in a car driving in heavy traffic. These are the ones who give cell phones and driving a bad name.
The question is, do you ban all hair pieces because a few are really bad? I guess the question becomes all that more important because a hair piece can't kill you... bad cell phone drivers, can.

When you see someone talking on the phone while driving, what comes to mind?
I want to scream, "Just shut up and drive!"
There should be a law against this.
Nothing, I use a cell phone when I drive.
I don't have a problem with it, as long as the person can multitask.
Other thoughts. (share them with us)

In this age of technology, I believe that drivers should use an earpiece or a headset whenever they are making calls or even when they may receive a call while driving. It doesn't even need to be a Bluetooth (wireless) headset; corded earpieces are very inexpensive and are well worth the added safety and convenience when behind the wheel.
I try to be open-minded and think that perhaps some drivers are on an important but short call, have ordered an earpiece/headset but haven't received it yet, or are on an extremely tight budget. Nonetheless, it is hard to fight the urge to scream to myself, get a headset!

I talk on the phone while I'm driving all the time, but I have handsfree. If you are responsible so will you. Both my hands are on the wheel when I'm talking on the phone and I'm paying attention to what I'm doing. If you can't talk and drive at the same time, pull over and do one or the other. But, handsfree is great.

I would not mind if drivers maintained their speed and stayed in their lane, but my experience has been that drivers can't cell phone and drive properly at the same time. It makes me angry.

At least they have slowed down instead of going full tilt with a phone stuck to their head. Kinda puts them in the way alot, gotta go around. But not going around a wreck like a few years ago. Now if we could get the guys & gals in the big,ugly, smelly trucks to display a little courtesy also, the roads would be safer. Dangerous people in those things.

ARGH!! One major problem with drivers on cell phones is that they often use the left lane and go well below the limit or the flow of traffic - impeding traffic behind them. They transform themselves into a TRAFFIC HAZZARD and are clueless to the fact.

by Chris loranger - 3/29/06 11:01 AM In reply to: Speed is NOT the issue by gmclamI agree, just teenage girls speed and talk on phones, most drivers do sit in the left lane going same speed as people in right lane (visual association?) or even worse cell phone users who vary their speed for no reason, fast then slow then fast then slow and on and on, develops road rage awfully fast here in the Northeast! Funny part is once they get off the phone you notice the difference of constant speeds and using basic common sense when driving in the passing lane, the road rage just doesn't go away as quick, I know I am a Masshole

I always use my headset. But it seems there is more of a stink about people talking on there cell phones than people driving along with their dogs in their lap with it's head hanging out the window.

However, if the call may be more that just a minute I pull over. I am able to anticipate drivers that have no excuse of their poor and dangerous driving. I am able to multitask and have taken 28 hours in track training. I guess my point is that I find that most people driving now a days are completely unaware that there are any other cars on the road. I'm guessing many cars must not come with the option of a turn signal. I find it more and more frequent that the car behind me would like to join us in the car - tailgating.
So, yes I have seen people on their phones, w/ and w/o headsets that are erratic and dangerous, but I have seen more that just shouldn't have gotten a licence to drive whether they are on the phone or not.

I voted for "Scream", but might just as well chosen "Should be Illegal." By now we know that drivers cannot multiplex well enough, especially in an intense cell-phone conversation (which seems all too common these days).
A lesser crime, or at least bad manners, is carrying on intense personal conversations on the floor or checkout line in Supermarkets or Home Depots, which is a clear affront to the privacy of other shoppers. However, I have no objection to people with cell phones in stores discussing prices and availabilities with remote persons. That's an efficient and appropriate useage of portable communication gear, and should offend nobody.
But from what I've read, driving and talking is just as bad as driving and drinking or smoking, and indicates the same level of indifference and contempt for the safety needs of others.
Ban teens on cells, require hands free talk for others

Teens do not have the driving skills nor judgment to drive with one hand and have their brain distracted. They should not be able to talk on cell phones while driving. Adults who do use cell phones while driving should be required to do so hands free. If an individual is involved in a moving vehicle accident as a driver, and it can be proven that the driver was using a cell phone at the time of the crash, that driver should be banned from using any tiype of phone while driving for one year. Insurance companies have the statistics compiled and distractions are trouble! BTW, I use a cell phone while driving, but forbid my teen daughter from doing so.
