Multiple Users on Windows XP

by roberth - 3/22/04 7:14 AM

I have 3 users defined on my PC each with their own password. I am the only administrator. When I install an application under my login, how do I prevent the other users getting access to the same application, especially if the application installs a desktop icon.

If the program wasn't written to be NT/2K/XP "aware" (i.e. the developers were lazy, rushed, etc) then you have to go through the documents and settings folder for each of the other users and manually get rid of any traces. If using XP Pro, you can also exclude them from being able to run the program if you want. (Technically that can also be done in XP Home, but it's a real pain involving the use of Safe Mode, and in either case it only works with an NTFS formatted drive)

If it is NT aware, then chances are it just stuck something in the "All Users" folder that you can simply move to your own profile or delete, whichever you want.

A very few apps will ask you if you want to set up icons and such for other users, but that's a pretty rare occurance.
