Intel Core Duo or AMD Turion 64 ML?
by brianabartlett - 3/3/06 11:50 PMWhich one is better, the Intel Core Duo or AMD Turion 64 ML? Does the Intel Core Duo come in 64 Bit? I was hoping to get a laptop with Intel Core Duo, but I wanted the 64 Bit for when Windows Vista came out. Apparently you can't have the best of both worlds. So which one should I go for?

Only the AMD Turion 64 has the x64 bits technology. This is a more powerfdul processor than the Pentium M but it takes more power.
So if you do A LOT of multi-tasking, tak e the Core Duo. If you want to keep your laptop the longest possible, take the AMD Tuion 64. The Turion manages well in multi-tasking, but it won't delivers the same performances than the Core Duo.
Personnally, you should take the AMD Turion. Less expensive and ready for the future, this is a wonderful mobile processor.

AMD64 Dual core + Linux...

On the other hand, AMD Turion 64 will have two cores in a few months.
So, if I were you I would wait a little, just to get the best of both tecnologies: 64 bits + dual core.
But if you need a 64 bit processor to run Windows Vista, maybe your notebook will get too old anyway. I suggest you to adopt a 64 bit version of Linux...

Windows Vista 64-bits ... This version of Windows can be "cool" as WinXP Pro 32 bits, or very bad as the WinXP 64 bits edition. In fact, XP 64 bits is a very bad verison of Windows, without all the drivers you can need, as most of the users doesn't see the dfference, except it run heavier than the 32 bits version.
Vista 64 bits can be like this.
On the other hand, Dual-Core appliations should develop faster than 64 bits applications, because if you look at this moment, each new application is writen to take the advantage of the multi-threading technology. 64-bits applications is very rare and just started to be on the market. I think this should take a long 3 years to see that most applications are writen in 64 bits ( and don't forget that both version - 32 & 64 bits will be available because only 1 computer on 3 is sold with a 64 bits processor so the developper is "obligated" to get out on the market both versions of the applications because it will always stay users with 32 bits processors ).
After a little 12 hours of studies, I can determinate that the Core Duo run very very very fast and even if you choose the AMD Turion 64 X2, never AMD will have the battery life of Intel. Never ! It should takes a miracle to see AMD with a longer battery life than Intel !
