Hi, I have read a lot of posts here about being new to MP3 players, but I still feel a little lost. I really know very little about MP3 players, but I know what I want;
1. Good sound quality
2. Lots of space (enough for around 1,000 songs, maybe more)
3. Don't really care about color screen
4. Would like playlists and shuffle option (if that's possible)
5. Don't really want to spend more than $200
6. Cute design and color
I really don't know much about line in recording or any other options.
Can anyone give me some suggestions?
TIA
u just found it urself. Its called an iPod Nano, just get a pair of decent earbuds for the good sound quality.
Reasons why its an iPod. I quote points: 2 through to 6
Point:
2. 1,000 songs quoted from the Apple iPod site.
3. Don't really care about colour screen - how many mp3 players out there DON'T have a colour screen nowadays
4. Playlist and shuffle option - that gave it away, its an iPod
5. Don't want to spend more than 200 bucks its obviously a 2GB iPod Nano for that exact price with 1 dollar change!
6. Cute design and colour - iPod nano is a fashion statemnet and is availible in 2 colours
Line in recording and other options u don't care about. and ipods don't really do this stuff.
So *drum roll*
ITS AN IPOD NANO, just buy some Shure, Etymotic, Sennheiser ear-buds. Avoid Sony MDREX71 in ear buds at all costs, i have them and the cord frays and the left or right bud busts and stop working after a while. So avoid Sony at all costs.
Newayz
Job done - we can get on with our lives now.
Have fun
If he wants to spend $200, he could get the 2GB version, which only holds 500 songs. The $250 4GB one holds 1,000 songs.
The Creative Zen Micro is the MP3 player to get. ![]()
toshiba gigabeat F10
10gb hard drive(5X as much as nano, but not flash memory)
good sound quality
amazing color screen.
playlists and shuffle available
available for about $160 if you look around
i think it looks cool.
OR
Creative Zen Micro 4gb-6gb
has better sound quality than toshiba and ipod(i think)
not a color screen
has playlists and suffle
available for much less than $200
available in like 12 colors or something
also has an FM radio built in, and a replaceable battery.
Do as u wish, its not my money ur spending.
.....if it was your money, which would you buy?
they're the same product, buy either one, its just a colour differece
the problem with your ideas is that while ipods are trendy in the long run no one will care it isn't rare to see one. The ipods use harddrives except for the nano. so if it was up to me to but an ipod i would surly get the nano. But while you said that the creative is good....i agree it is ok my brother has it and i picked it out. Creative is not the best on their mp3s. My brothers has broken 3 times now and i had a nomad once and that craped on my once and i then vowed to never get hard drive again. If you want my adivce i would say u need to get a flash player because if you are like me and am a student or walk around with your player or but it in a bag/bookbag then do not get a hdd player. The only problems i have had with flash players is the screens they can break/crack/or just plain stop working but then again so can any other screen. So i say get a flash player and i would recommend the new sansa seires i can't remember the numbers but they have 2g 4g and 6g and u can use external memory cards which means unlimited memory. 6g of music is alot about 1,500 songs and honestly who has that much audio anyway.
I recommend the archos gmini xs 100. Here's why
1. Good sound quality (according to Cnet review)
2. 4G capacity (that equals around 1,000 songs)
3. No color screen
4. Playlist and Shuffle option
5. Only cost $139.95
6. Comes in Black, Pink, Silver and Blue
It's a nice basic package.

P.S. In May Archos is coming out with the 104. It's pretty much like the Gmini XS 100. It only cost $150, has a color screen and an improved navigation (supposedly). Just giving you the heads up. I always hate when I buy something and the improved version comes out a few weeks later.

I appreciate the different ideas. What are the advantages/disadvantages of having a flash drive or a hard drive? I will probably wait another few months since they are constantly coming out with bigger and better things.
HDD:
Advantage - Cheaper than Flash for the same amount of storage.
Disadvantage - Can be damaged by shock/vibration that would happen if you jogged or exercised with it a lot.
Flash:
Advantage - Won't be damaged by shock/vibration when jogging/exercising with it.
Disadvantage - More expensive than HDD for the same amount of storage.
You might want to check out this player really cool colors, I have the black color and when you turn it on it has blue color backlighting also hold a ton of songs with 6Gig capacity, once you get used to the touchpad this is really a great player, o yes has fm tuner also which you can record from and also has voice recorder... I bought mine new off ebay for $150.00, these go new in stores like Circuit City for about $185.00
I have been researching more and now I want one with a wireless FM tuner (I think that's what it's called) so I can listen in my car (via the radio). Do all of these have this or will I have to buy an adapter? Are there pros and cons to these (battery life, charging while I listen, etc.)?
The more I am learning the harder the decision is! ![]()
There aren't any MP3 players that come with an FM transmitter (that's what you're looking for) built-in. Plenty of MP3 players come with FM tuners, which let you use the MP3 player as an FM radio if you get bored with your MP3's. There are plenty of FM transmitters on the market which you just plug into the player's headphone jack.
I really don't know about battery life with an FM transmitter, but I think most of them use their own battery, so the MP3 players battery life when using the transmitter should be the same as if you're using headphones.
