I know that I probably did something to make my computer unhappy with me but I just don't remember doing anything that drastic or out of the ordinary so the only thing I can come up with is that Norton AntiVirus 2006 System Works did it.
It came up with the error message:

and I tried to do the steps that it told me but I can't even acces my add/remove programs, i can't even erase/delete files and get this error message when i do so:

i have a lot invested on this computer like music that i am releasing to record companies next fall and i can't lose any of my material. please help or direct me in any way.
also, i followed the links in the norton automated support assistant but all it seems to do is keep telling me to ''please wait'' while that little thing keeps spinning around. am i losing my mind or what here???
Could be caused by Norton, or just as well could be caused by something else, like some virus. You never know, in fact.
The time to think about BACKUP is long overdue, I should say. Having things you can't afford to lose on just one medium is rather risky, as you noticed. Time to invest in a cd- or dvd-burner or an external hard disk before it's too late. You might be able to burn or copy in Safe Mode if there's no software to install.
The thing to do if these backup methods don't work: boot from your XP CD and ask it to do a repair install and keep your own data. If a repair install doesn't help (as I expect) do a clean install without format still keeping your data. You might need to do some trickery to access them afterwards, but they won't be lost, in principle.
If you don't trust this, bring your PC to a tech and ask him to do a backup of your data. Given the current state of the machine it's likely he will mount the hard disk as a slave in another machine and burn everything you like to DVD. If you've got another PC, or even another empty harddisk, you could do it yourself, in principle.
Hope this helps.

I'd try to do as Kees mentioned first. Mount the drive as slave in a PC that has a full and up to date AV program and the Anti-Spyware suite of utilities (at my site below). Run full scans on the drive. Then back up what you can't afford to loose to the master drive or to optical media.

and burn copies of every new one the day you have them ready or even halfway done...
You can't rely in computers's apparent soundness.
i used to have the full retail version of norton installed on my computer but when i told a friend of mine he went spaz. he recomenderd avast antivirus so i downloaded and installed it. avast asked to to restart the computer which i did and it poped up with 115 virusus trojans etc. i had norton check for updates at 6 am everyday and run a full system scan every day at 6pm. i had norton for 3 months and it never said i had any viruses on my computer. after my computer booted up with newly installed avast and 115 viruses less the computer actually sarted working properly without me having to end programs cause the froze or crashed on me etc. i uninstalled norton and have had avast on my computer for 3 years after that without any troubles.
thank god for avast
pharmatek, Below is the Norton suggested solution to your problem link. Make sure to click on "What if this didn't work?" and follow the instruction.

Go 2 Symantec homepage and download removaltool.
Then u have several ways 2 go.
try start in safe mode uninstall norton ,rebot and look.
U can also make sure that u can boot from CD/DVD drive
and this way run a repairprogram.
I did it that way,and went over 2 avast/pro and Zonelarm/pro
Both programs exist as freeware as well.

Do not use Norton!
Use Nod 32. It is the best antivirus.
I already had some problem when i had Norton, now no any problems.

I use Norton SystemWorks 2006 and haven't had any problems. I would try running Norton WinDoctor directly from the SystemWorks CD to see if it finds anything.
I bought and installed Norton Antivirus and Personal Firewall 2006 in January.
Since then I have had so many peculiarities and the PC has slowed down so dramatically I have now removed them both.
I now use AVG for anti-virus ; WinXP for a firewall and Spyware Doctor for pop-ups etc. Machine runs faster, no funnies and all is well, so far
Norton SystemsWorks 2006 totally crashed my computer and I had to send it to Sony for a new hard drive. Take the advise and have a tech backup your files. I will not use another Norton Product. Symantec was no help at all trying to resolve the problem.
I concur with several members here. I am an IT integrator and have used Symantec for years. I installed the Premier 2006 on several of my clients including my system as well, and it munged up my system. After 2 (Yep thats right TWO) Months of working with the purported "tech support" from Bombay, New Delhi, or wherever they are answering the phones, they logged my event, told me they were escalating the call, and then completely blew me off. Haven't heard from them since> Wrote to President of Symantec and fill him in on this situation and explained why I will no longer be buying, using, or selling Symantec products to my clients. Since then, I've purchased The Shield Firewall with VI Robot antivirus from PC Security Shield. It's fast, there is no noticable deggradation in system performance, and it already has out-gunned the Norton product for stopping viruses and system hacks. And it was a fraction of the cost. To replace the tools, I use iolo.com Registry Mechanic and PC Mechanic. Nicer interface, better tools, and more thorough. Only caveat is they are slower at degraggin my system, but very user friendly.

Try booting in safe mode and then add/remove to remove NAV. Don't run without AV protection however. You might consider download AVG free edition and using that as your anti-virus shield.
