Adding a hard drive to my system.

by RileyRowan - 3/19/06 7:47 AM

I want to take the hard drive out of my sons comp. and put it into mine. Is there any formating that needs to be done? It already has a few programs on it, so by switching it, would it be erased or will the info transfer with it?

perhaps better to delete the partition and recreate it and format it. This will start you fresh and clean for the old HDD in its new environment. Will it be on the same cab;e with another drive ? If yes, you might have to change the jumpering

You didn't mention anything about the systems involved so its only guessing for answers. Provide the system info from and to, so get a better idea to approach the problem. For all intents and purposes, why not format on son's system, then bring it over to yours. If unable to format, then whatever info is on there *MAYBE* accessed or simply wiped out later(format)if that's the purpose on new system. Alot depends on the OSes involved and whatnot. You can find more info from the HD maker's support website and possible s/w required for ease of install or the vendor's website like Dell, IBM, etc. navigate there for any downloadable info.

normally no formating required. 99% of the time you just connect it and it would be like your stock one.

ADDING A HARD DRIVE

by smithjp3 - 3/23/06 11:19 PM In reply to: Adding a hard drive to my system. by RileyRowan

HI,

NOW ACCORDING TO WHAT U ARE SAYING, U WANT TO DISCONNECT THE HARD DRIVE FROM YOUR SON'S SYSTEM AND ATTACH IT TO YOUR SYSTEM? IS THAT RIGHT? THEN YOU DO NOT NEED TO FORMAT THE DRIVE, AS FORMATTING IS DONE IF YOU WANT TO ERASE EVERYTHING ON THE DRIVE AND THEN INSTALL THE OS AND APPLICATIONS BACK ON.

JUST SWITCHING THE HARD DRIVE WILL TRANSFER EVERYTHING WITH THE HARD DRIVE INCLUDING EVERYTHING WHICH WAS SAVED ON THE DRIVE. AFTER U ATTACH THE HARD DRIVE ALSO MAKE SURE OF THE JUMPER SETTINGS AND ALSO CHECK TO SEE IF IT IS DETECTED IN THE SYSTEM SETUP, IF IT IS, U ARE READY TO GO!!!!!
