System Memeory Cache

by JoeD1979 - 3/21/06 7:37 PM

Hello Everyone, Recently I upped from 512 to 1G ram, since I have also upped several drivers and prog. versions as well(the most recent being Nvidia Display Driver). I am always tweaking (prob too much).......Long story short-my "system cache phys mem" under performance tab in task mngr starts at bout 138mb and steadily climbs to 700 or 800mb, overtaking my available mem. It has never gone so far as too take all the avail. mem but seemingly does affect some prog. that use large amnts of mem, ie., Nero, Ulead and possibly ie. These prog show themselves in process but not in apps tab under task mngr-they also will not shut down until reboot. I have been told that I can't change the amnt of sys cache mem...I just want to limit it to 512 or less. Any thoughts are much appreciated. Thanks BB

Windows will

use as much memory as it needs at any given moment. Win XP is a little unique in that it will use any extra memory that is available for cache when available if it can make good use of it

It is simply taking advantage of the memory that you added.

Why do you want to limit it??? What else did you buy it for?? To sit idle???

The sys mem does this even when not much is running leaving the avail mem less and less as time goes on i bought it to be avail to me and my programs whenever i need it. It has affected some programs that use alot of mem.(video editing) What is it doing with it in the cache and why won't it release more to me when I need it?

I do not know the answer to that

My understandig is that XP should reassign the memory when needed.

Wonder if Ed O'Daniel knows.

The System Cache is...

memory that is being used to map open files. If therfe is not enough system memory then portions of the cache are off loaded to virtual memory (the paging file) which is MUCH SLOWER.

Your OS is working with the memory exactly as it is supposed to and limiting the System Cache would be counter productive.

It is possible that some of your apps or drivers themselves have problems. It is also possible that you have either done away with your page file or reduced it to where it isn't working properly -- you don't mention.

You might consider making use of the Performance Monitoring tool and here is a link to using it -

These two links might also prove useful to you but use them ONLY after you understand what the tips offered actually do.

Thanks for

all the ideas and comments. Your point is well taken that one ( or more ) prog are unstable, page file is optimum, I will however try some tools if applicable and update if anything interesting pops up, Thanks Again, BB
